Aren't they the nameless mooks from the beginning of Mobile Suit: Gundam? I was never a fan of those as they seemed to be made of tissue paper and prayers.

Mobile Suit: Gundam is pretty much the only Mecha Anime I've got round to watching. If they turn up in other series and become more badass, then I apologise.

Mostly mooks, yeah, but that's due strongly to the gundams' multiple mile thick plot armor. Think 08th's the only one I've personally seen that Zaku are pretty awesome in, but eh. I think they have decent showings in a few others, too. Zaku are great, but generally offscreen more than on. Insofar as fluff goes, they can usually pretty easily squash quite a few things, especially when they first show up in whatever series it is.

Or, to put it another way, the Zaku is basically what kicked the ever-loving out of conventional military (and managed to stomp fed mobile suits for a while, too) before the first gundam series started, and continued to be (or be the primary design inspiration for) the military workhorse of choice for a number of superpowers throughout gundam's history.

So basically they're awesome but author fiat screws them over in most of shows, with a few exceptions. Most importantly, they look hella' more awesome than the gundams themselves :P

Kay, been working on the update for a couple of hours now, looking like it might take another day. Sorry about that, but I've gotta cook tonight, on top of trying to avoid being burned out. I MIGHT make it if it jumps straight into intermission after the second wave (I'm just entering it now, got about an hour left before I save everything and head off to start cooking), but it's not looking good. Sorry, but gundam SEED related chapters can get pretty wordy. :P

Also, I approve of ZakuChat.

And yeah, my primary reason for loving the things is just how they look, I always liked the head and the heat axe thing (Heat hawk?). Always used one before shining gundam got unlocked in the various dynasty warriors gundam games. Anyway, back to work.

EDIT: All right, yep. Gonna get it out tomarrow for sure, though, don't worry about that. Mini update coming up later today also! Minor technical difficulties but we'll go over them tomarrow when I post the update. Nothing that effects the schedule of the update at all, and only effects the content of the update in a minor way. :P

So the current update is taking forever so I decided to write up a brief explanation of why Combattler V seems to attract enemies like flies/A brief discussion about the numbers behind the targeting priorities.

You see, the primary deciding factor in what an enemy targets is the chance for the enemy to hit the unit. Combattler, being a super, usually has no chance to dodge, especially against real grunts, which tend to be smaller and more accurate. On top of this, max HP is taken into account. Combattler has the highest max HP of any unit in our army now, barring battleships. Ditto. Armor is oddly enough NOT taken into account, neither are barriers.

THis is why, occasionally when attacking a real, damaging it, and nearly killing it, the rest of the grunts will charge right past it and attack a super robot right behind it, promptly getting countered and murdered, six times in a row, rather then one of them just taking a potshot at the real robot that they have a decent chance of finishing off, on top of not getting mauled because again, reals have a hard time one shotting dudes.

Now, the one thing that bypasses all this junk is battleships. If you've ever played advance wars 1, and known about that whole "spam APC's and nothing will ever attack anything that's NOT an APC" AI quirk, it's like that, except you can't pump out three battleships a turn and clog the enemy up with them. Also the notable problem of if the battleship is shot down, you're done. I'm not sure if the game has a specific "ALWAYS TARGET BATTLESHIP" code line in there somewhere, or it's just because battleships tend to be 2L size and as such don't tend to dodge much. They also have a metric ton of HP.

Frankly, I think this AI is actually pretty decent, but it'd go from decent to kinda nasty if it took armor into account too, specifically going after soft units like combattler, and also removed the whole binary "100% chance to hit = Always attack this even if it has 2000 armor" thing. Most of the lack of difficulty in this game comes from the fact that your dudes just drastically overpower grunts even if unupgraded, and when upgraded will curbstomp most bosses as well.

Anyway, there's the mini update for you. New real update tomorrow for serious.

GUNDAAAAAAAM

Several mobile suits teleport in, and three of the "X-Numbers" (the anti-mobile suit weapons, IE gundams, being developed on Heliopolis) have been taken over by ZAFT. They fire on the factory to test their weapons.

developing a workable movement OS... How about you, Dearka?

Reconstructing system... Calibration complete. I'm ready to move.

Now's the time to mention, coordinators are genetically altered humans. They can be stronger, faster, smarter and generally better then your average human, hence the fact that Dearka and the rest were able to recode an entire movement OS in a minute or two. They're a lot like Augments from Star Trek, if you know about them. Although as a side note, Coordinators are hated because they are envied, rather then anything that they actually did.

Yzak: Nicol?

Dearka: Athrun and Rusty are late.
Yzak:Heh... They'll be fine. At any rate, we should go ahead and take these 3 units back. We can't let them get trashed before we return to the ship... Let's go!

The three gundams escape.

Kira: Watch out!
Murrue: Gah! A child?! What are you doing here?!
Kira:I escorted some girl to a shelter, but they were full, so I had to stay out here. I'm heading to block No. 5's shelter.
Murrue: It's already been taken out... Over here!

I forget if I mentioned it, but it won't hurt to repeat; Murrue is from Gundam Seed.

Murrue: Argh!
Kira:They got you?! Are you okay?! ...Huh?!

Kira's kind've got a case of the uguuu going on here.

Athrun:Kira... Is that you?
Murrue:Dammit!

Murrue: Please, get behind the seat! I have to save this unit at the very least! ...Okay, I should be able to move it.
Kira: (Was that... Athrun? No way... What's he doing here?)
Athrun: Can't help it...
Miguel:Athrun, what happened?!

The Strike and Aegis gundams activate, the Strike being controlled by Murrue, and Aegis by Athrun.

Miguel: Here they come. Stop lagging behind, Rusty! Hurry up and fall back!
Athrun: Rusty's dead. A Federation officer's piloting that unit.

As is tradition, nobody cares about the redshirt.

Miguel: Damn! I'll capture it, then. You go ahead and escape.
Athrun: Understood. (...I don't believe. That guy looked like Kira Yamato, but there's no way he would do something like that...)

Aegis escapes.

Murrue: There are so many GINNs...

So, to clarify, right now the Strike Gundam is surrounded by 11 GINN's (Mobile suit grunts, Gundam seed), along with a.... I believe a Bcue? Which is basically an upgraded GINN, Being piloted by a commander. On top of this, the strike is mostly unequipped (it uses a frame system like the Aestivalises), and it's movement OS isn't working very well.

Miguel: Commence attack!

But it still has one ace in the hole.

Murrue: What?! Quickly! Activate the Phase Shift armor!

It is fired on, and takes no damage from the attack, thanks to said phase shift armor.

Murrue: Nngh...
Miguel: Impossible! No damage?! What the hell kind of armor is that?!
Kira:S-So this is Phase Shift armor?

Note again, gundam is a very fleshed out series, Phase Shift armor is not some kind of mega secret weapon, it's used in the Bloody Valentine war, that takes place before the game or SEED itself even starts, but that doesn't make it any less impressive. It absorbs any kind of physical impact, making it fairly useful against explosives and traditional gunfire, along with any physical blades or clubs something may be using on it.

Miriallia:Ahhhhh!
Sai: They're fighting inside the colony!
Kira:Sai?! Kuzzey, Tolle, and Mirrallia, too?! What are you all doing here?! Hey, you! There are some friends of mine directly below us! Please, get this thing away from them!
Murrue: I can't... This is all I can do with the OS in its current state.
Miguel: Oh, I get it... Its OS is still incomplete, huh? All units, surround that machine! They can't move, so let's bag it and get out of here!

A refreshingly direct approach. Just grab the thing and take off since it can't really move.

Kira:Well of COURSE we can't move it with an OS like this... It's a wonder this thing can move at all.

Burn.

Murrue: Well, no! The OS hasn't been finished yet, after all! (Just who IS this boy?)

The Nadesico arrives.

Miguel: What? A warship?!
Ruri: ZAFT mobile suits confirmed. It seems they're engaging an unknown unit.
Yurika: Let's just tear right past them!
Murrue: That's Nergal's mobile warship?! I guess they were attacked by ZAFT, too... I think we can consider them friends for now. Unidentified Nergal warship, can you hear me? This is Murrue Ramius of the UEFA's 5th Special Division. I demand that you rescue us.
Kira: Could you change places with me, please?
Murrue: Huh? What are you-
Kira: Hurry up! I can't let them capture everybody else, too!
Murrue:W-What are you d-
Yurika: This is Yurika Misumaru, Captain of the Nadesico. Forgive me, Ms. Ramius, but I refuse to start a battle inside a colony.
Murrue: Misumaru? Don't tell me you're Adm. Misumaru's...
Yurika: ...Yp! I'm his daughter!
Murrue: I see. I've heard some rumors... Capt. Misumaru, this is an emergency. All ways out are blocked. This is going to get ugly whether you like it or not! That's why I'm demanding you rescue us! It's extremely important!
Yurika: But if we fight inside the colony...
Murrue: This is no time for hesitation! Things will only get worse if they capture this mobile suit!
Ruri: Captain, that unit doesn't appear to be military standard.
Akatsuki: It's a prototype unit. One of the Federation's new weapons. A mobile suit designed for the purposes of total combat. Those folks at morgenroete earned their paychecks, all right...
Miguel: Dammit, those are the Nergal warship's units. They escaped the team headed for the docks, so we'll just have to take 'em down here!
Hyoma:Argh, they're coming after us?!
Ruri: We're not the enemy, but... It appears no one bothered to inform them.
Minato:Then let's just help those federation people! We can't abandon them now!
Calvina: I don't want to start a battle inside the colony either, Captain, but we're out of options.
Yurika: Understood. All units, take off! I'm begging you! Try to limit damage to the colony!

The units are deployed. We still have under the threshold, so they all go out.

Koji:Time's up, ZAFT! It's time for you to meet your Mazinger!

I love that line so much, you have no idea, ohhh my god. :D

Hyoma: Let's go, everyone! There's no way I'm gonna let them get away with this!
Juzo: Wow, Hyoma! Save that fighting spirit for kicking their sorry asses!
Ryoko: So this is war... Aren't the coordinators fellow Earthlings too?! Dammit, why did thngs have to turn out like this?!
Akatsuki: There's no such thing as co-ordinators or Naturals, I'm afraid. As long as people exist, they will always cause conflict amongst themselves. We simply have to do What we can to help. Isn't that right... Mr. Tenkawa?
Akito:Shut up, Shut UP! I'll protect the Nadesico and everybody onboard! There's no need to even think about it!

Atta boy. Looks like he's, at least grudgingly, snapped out of his funk.

David: After we became friends with Eiji, it's kinda sad to see that the rest of humanity can't understand each other. Sorry Eiji... Just when you finally got to see the earth, we have to go and get caught up in the thick of things.
Eiji: It's all right, David. Please, don't worry about it.
Noal: Well, we're still alive, so... Let's do our best to get outta here!
Aki:Yes... We must!
Calvina: (What a mess. No matter what you believe, in the end you're nothing more then a pilot who anticipates only the battlefield. Fighting and defeating the enemy, whoever they may be, is all you can do...) Hmph. Maybe that's for the best. Fighting across endless battlefields, waiting only for your death... Guess it could be worse.
Katia: What was that, Calvina?
Calvina: Nothing. they're right in front of us, so stay sharp!
Katia: Right... We have to give this our all. We entrust everything to you!
Calvina: Good. I've worked too hard for you girls to bail out now. We're past the point of no return!
Miguel: Those are the guys Cdr. Creuset warned me about... All units, take down the Naturals!
Murrue: Those are the Nadesico's troops? ...Impressive.
Kira: ...Reboot complete. Here we go!
Murrue: Huh?! Wait a second!
Kira: Those are my friends over there! We can't fight with them nearby, can we?! Everybody, get out of here! Hurry!
Tolle: That voice...!
Sai: Is Kira piloting that thing?!
Mirallia: We were looking for you, Kira! What happened?!
Kira: I'm not sure, but... This is how things turned out. Get out of here and find shelter!
Sai: Understood! Kira, take care!
Tolle: Don't do anything reckless, buddy!
Kira: Weapons... Where are the weapons?!
Murrue:(Don't tell me he reconstructed the entire system while talking to his friends? This kid is something else...!)

That kinda kept going didn't it? Jeez. Anyway.

TURN ONE!

KAY. That one blue dot down there in the base is the strike, and if it goes down, we lose. This was the first mission I lost because I was an incredible doof and did not move the strike into some safe terrain. Once you do that, this is pretty easy. Although, as of note, RIGHT NOW? The strike is an enormous wuss. The only bonus it has is phase shift armor, which is a decent barrier that activates on physical attacks, absorbing 800 damage. That is it. It'll get much better when it manages to get a hold of a frame, but until then we've kinda gotta baby it. But anyway, let's discuss gundams in general.

Gundams, despite being a real robot, are actually kind've somewhere in the middle. They can dodge fairly well, they can usually take a hit pretty well (preferably with the help of a barrier of some kind), they hit pretty hard for a real, they're fairly accurate, they're a medium sized robot, etcetcetc. More than anything, gundams require a decent pilot to be decent, they reflect their pilot's stats VERY well, as they're a pretty even ground to be operating on. THis is part of the reason that any time Amuro shows up in a super robot wars game, he is damn good, because Amuro (The pilot of the original gundam, not appearing in this game) is a damn fine pilot. Perhaps not quite that much could be said of Kira, but he does well enough.

Back to the note that frameless strike is a huge wuss, it's strongest attack is 2400 damage, at a 1-3 range, and that is all he has, aside from "Igelstellung"'s which are basically head vulcans, which anyone that has seen a gundam show knows are horribly useless in mobile suit combat.

Again though, strike will get MUCH better when it gets a frame on it. Anyway, we move it up onto a military base (30% defese 30% evade 20% HP regen 20% EN regen, the best terrain in the game) and attack a GINN.

Note Strike took greatly reduced damage, phase shift armor+defensive terrain makes strike into a (decent) tank. Also of note, the GINN! Gundam has always had excellent grunt suit design, and SEED is no exception. Also note it looks similar to a kinda fancied up Zaku.(The Zaku was the original gundam grunt unit, again not appearing here. Design is notably popular.) Of note is that the GINN has mostly if not entirely physical weapons, making the strike a particularly effective weapon against them! It's easy to lose the original intent of these machines in the sea of various other series'. Anyway, the cavalry moves out. AND I FORGOT TO SWITCH FRAMES AGAIN SOMEHOW. I SWORE I CHANGED THEM AT THE END OF THE LAST UPDATE AAAAA oh well. We'll switch them to air frames to show them off. Decreases HP, EN, and Armor, increases the aesti's movement to 7 and gives mobility a small boost as well. Of note, however, is they cannot land, not that it's an issue with the gravity wave beam. Combattler hammers a GINN. Also of note, the GINN's only beam weapon, and if I recall it's long range and decent damage too, so it's unfortunatly a fairly effective weapon. As long as Strike stays up in things faces it's not a huge issue though.

ENEMY PHASE!

The GINN's generally just kind've move in the direction of the main force. One takes a potshot at the strike as it goes by.

Thanks to defense, strike takes zero damage. The strike taking zero damage is something you'll see a lot. Keeping a resupply unit nearby and pumping it's energy is definitely worthwhile. One ginn is counter killed by combattler, using V laser no less, and another loses about 95% HP from a big blast counterattack. Same ole same ole. Almost everything else attacks strike and either does zero damage, or dodges, two ginn's managed to get a hit in and didn't do more then 500 damage. I'm beginning to feel I missed a great unit in my first playthrough by skipping over strike. Remember, it's still missing a frame, and most of them ADD defensive stats! Also Miguel, the commander, is still hanging back.

TURN TWO!

Now, we land everybody currently hovering over those littlte white buildings. They are ALL +30% defense/evade and +20% HP and EN regen. That big central area strike is currently in is an excellent staging area. For now we'll have to make do with the area most of our units are hovering nearby, but we can move in there fairly quickly. Baybull finishes off a heavily wounded GINN and David gets a level out of it. Level 5, no new spirits. Of note was the fact that even Baybull had a 30% chance of being hit in this terrain, so it's definately really nice. Bellzelute picks off a GINN with shot launcher from 6 squares away, while moving into position. That HE radar was a good idea, I'll admit. Combattler charges headlong into the GINN's, halving one of them. Aphrodite/Blue Earth both heal him, and both get levels. No new spirits. Of note is Kira's spirits - Focus(30% to dodge and hit rate for one turn) for 15 SP, and Accel (+3 to movement for one move command) for 5 SP, along with Murrue's(She's currently in the strike too, remember. This is the only time she'll be in here, but we'll get to that.), Wall - 15 SP(recieve 10 damage for one attack, if you dodge it's not used up), and Focus - 15 SP. Anyway, now that we've gotten that out of the way, the strike finishes a damaged GINN.

Or not. You now see how bad the igellestung's are. Naturally I will be trying to finish off all the units I can with them. The Nadesico finally arrives on the scene, missling a full health GINN, and deploys the five Aesties. Let's check out the air frame with old Akito.

Kind've a color mismatch. Looks great on Gai's aesti, but well, yeah. Air Aesti gains no new moves from 0G Aesti, just looks different, and gains some evasiveness/Loses some armor/HP. Akatsuki finishes off the remaining GINN above the strike, and the girls move in to the two below the road connecting the two factories. Taking out... one of them. The GINN is a fairly heavily armored grunt compared to what we've seen so I'm not too surprised. This ends the turn.

ENEMY PHASE

A Ginn attacks the strike, it dodges. Another attacks the Nadesico, the blue earth takes the hit for them,  the barrier on it absorbs the brunt of the attack, did about 200 damage. I may have to revise the robot roll call for blue earth when I add strike. Anyway, Nadesico counters, killing it in the process, and gaining a level. All pilots level 7, no new spirits. The last two GINNs fire at one of the Aestivalis' and strike, both dodge. Miguel moves up. I've got a plan for him...

TURN THREE!

Only four more left for this wave. Mission is actually pretty short, I just underestimated the opening dialogue. Anyway, we lift bellzelute off, and move it as close to miguel as we can.

That should do nicely, presuming he doesn't get in under the minimum range of bellzelute. More repairs to combattler. Most folk except mazinger move towards the remaining GINN's. Mazinger moves south, and eiji casts accel, takes off, and catches up with everyone else. Strike moves in and attacks the second southernmost GINN, doubling as bait for miguel. The Nadesico moves south and finishes the GINN with missles. Combattler moves south with Mazinger, and the Aesties attack the southernmost GINN. They finish it in two attacks with Distortion punches. Akatsuki moves in and attacks the final reamining GINN with Distortion punch.

But wait! Miguel took that hit! And the generic GINN attacked back! Enemies are officially starting to support defend each other, although typically a unit will only support defend a commander/a commander will only support defend a unit. We don't have to worry about seas of grunts support defending each other and spreading damage out over themselves optimally. Also it would appear Miguel is in a GINN, not a Bcue. The map symbols are very similar. Luckily Miguel can only support defend ONCE, so akito manages to get in a decent hit on the remaining GINN, annnnd takes a hit in return for about 2400 damage, over half his health, with distortion field activated. Yow, that ion cannon hits HARD. This ends the turn.

ENEMY PHASE

Luckily one of the GINN's feels it's a better better decision to shoot at Mazinger Z and do about 700 damage rather then try to hit akito again, so everything is okay. Miguel goes for strike, as anticipated.

Miguel:Even with all that armor, do you really think you can win with those moves?!
Kira: Not here! Stop!

He misses.

TURN FOUR!

Time to finish up this wave. Akatsuki and Akito hurry back to the Gravity Wave beam. Akatsuki takes a potshot at the remaining Grunt, but Miguel takes the hit. At least it ate his support defense. We're gonna TRY to finish this without moving anybody from the southern part of our formation into the right side, but I'm not sure how possible that is since the GINN and Miguel are camping out on defensive terrain. Worth a shot. Strike halves the HP of the generic GINN, and Eiji makes his appearence by finishing him off.

The perils of screencapping explosions.

I put trust in Baybull to hit Miguel, with a 71% chance to hit, and a 44% chance to BE hit. Miguel is also using the Heavy Ion Cannon so this could very well one shot him, or at least nearly so, if it hits.

Miguel: Tch! Out of the way, you impertinent Natural!

A smashing success. Good work fella. Of note was that baybull was in the air, so he wasn't getting any defensive bonuses. Miguel isn't quite soft enough to finish off yet, since bellzelute only has O Rifle N available right now, so we let buldy take a similar gamble.

A similar success. Hell yeah. Next up we use Focus and attack Miguel with O Rifle N. Hopefully it'll hit and end this. Since Miguel is VERY evasive, we have Ruri use Scan(5 SP, it will reveal info on the weapons/stats of a unit if no one has attacked him yet, and lower mobility by 10%) on him. With both Focus and Scan active, we have a nice 87% chance to hit. It's in the bag.

DAMN. IT. Luckily we were out of range, so we didn't get a nasty counterattack. Guess we'll have to move in the Aestis to finish this up. Oh well. Of note is that, even though we missed Scan is still active and will be active for the rest of the turn I believe. We move Bellzelute down with the rest to hopefully get it in position for later. Hikaru hits, doing about 700 damage, dodges the counterattack. The next attack should be it...

And Izumi with the finisher. She gains a level, level 7 now, and a level of support attack. Nice. We get a Booster, and two selling fodder from Miguel.

Miguel:System frozen?! Gah! Do I have to punch out?!

He escapes, and another battleship arrives.

The battleship is one tile down and to the right of the cursor now if you can't spot it.

Murrue:The Archangel!

...Wait, X-105 is active?! X-105, do you copy? Who's the pilot?!

Murrue:This is the X-105 Strike. Lt. Murrue Ramius speaking.
Natarle: Lt. Ramius?! This is Lt. Natarle Badgiruel. I'm glad to see you're all right, but... what happened?
Murrue: Lt. Badgiruel? Why are you...
Natarle: The ship's all right... ...but all other high-ranking officers, including the Captain, died in the attack.
Murrue: No, it can't be...!
Calvina:Another warship, huh. Is it the Federation's?
Yurika: Uh, what are you going to do now?
Murrue: That's the special assault ship, Archangel, which I've been assigned to. Kira, please take me there.
Kira: Understood.

The rest next post. Exceeded the charecter limit, wow. No images, so you'll probably see them both anyway.

The strike heads towards the archangel and boards it. A mysterious allied craft appears on the far right side of the map.

Calvina:That's the Federation's Moebius Zero mobile armor, I take it...
Mu: Man, what a day! Two ships inside the colony, even. This is Lt. Mu La Flaga of the 7th mobile fleet. Nadesico and Archangel, do you copy?
Akatsuki: Mu La Flaga? Why, I didn't know the "Hawk of Endymion" was stationed here.
Yurika: He's a "Hawk"...? Why do they call him that?
Akatsuki: The man's a famous ace of the Grimaldi front line. That's why.
Ruri: The Grimaldi front line... ...That was where the first battle broke out just before we headed for Mars, correct?
Akatsuki: That's right. The Moebius and Delphiniums didn't do much good in anti-mobile suit combat. In fact, the Federation was overwhelmed by them. It's said that in the end, he was the only man left standing on our side, piloting the Moebius Zero.
Mu:I don't know who you are, but uh... I'd prefer it if you didn't dredge up that kinda stuff. Also, I hate to tell you this, but the nearby Federation armada was annihilated. Oh, did I mention there's another ZAFT battalion on the way? To get caught with egg on our faces at a time like this would be a disaster.
Murrue: What did you say?

An explosion rocks Heliopolis. Not good.

Simone: What was that?!
Ruri:Outer colony wall damaged. It appears to be an attack from ZAFT. Moving alert to level 9. Shelters locked.
Erina:Their commander wants to destroy the colony?! This is a neutral area!

This is really your first major hint at the mental state of creusent, incidentally. "You mean they were making weapons in secret? Well we'll steal them, AND BLOW UP THE ENTIRE THING!" Stealing them yes, blowing up a primarily civilian colony, no. I guess it could be to prevent future weapons development, but it's not like it holds any significance now that they know it was being done in heliopolis in secret. They wouldn't be able to get away with it again. Maybe as an example? Who can say.

Ruri: But it was developing new weapons for the Federation. Mobile suits were confirmed entering via the dome hole in the outer wall.
Yurika: Let's take 'em down!
Murrue: Lt. Badgiruel!
Natarle: The most experienced officer here is you, Lt. Ramius. I thought I might act as your proxy from now on.
Murrue: Me? Understood. Archangel, take off and return fire! Kira, make sure you equip the Sword Striker pack when you get a chance!
Kira: Hold up, please! At this rate Heliopolis is going to fall apart!
Murrue: I know! But what are we supposed to do about it?!
Kira:...Understood. At the very least, please take in my friends! We're at level 9 alert, so they can't enter the shelters anymore!
Natarle: Captain, just what are you trying to do?
Murrue: ...Fine. Lieutenant, there are some children and civilians who were unable to get to the shelters. Please accommodate them.
Natarle: Captain, are you sure? This ship is-
Murrue:Do it!
Natarle: ...Understood.
Murrue:We'll take off as soon as they're inside.

More GINNs arrive.

Take out the Federation's new weapon, as well as Nergal's forces! I see, now... It seems a noisy fly is flitting around in here, too.

Mu: What the-?!
Creuset:Can you sense me, too? You've been burdened with an unfortunate destiny, Mu La Flaga!
Mu:Gah! Rau Le Creuset?!
Creuset:You always get in my way... Of course, I often do the same to you!

The sword strike emerges.

Kira:The Sword Strike... It's equipped with a blade? Everyone should be accommodated by now. Seriously, though... Why am I doing this?

New conditions. The strike can be shot down, since it's been secured and is firmly in federation hands, annnnd the primary goal is to get Le Creuset shot down. Two new units, the Archangel is a fairly standard battleship, has an anti beam coat on it (Laminate armor), better then the phase shift armor and distortion field, at 1200 damage removed, but only works on beam weapons. The Moebius Zero (Mu), is a real robot that honestly looks pretty cool, and is pretty nice to boot, partially due to the fact that Mu is just a really good pilot. Dodges very well, has two attacks, but they're nice ones. We start this with Ryoko attacking a GINN with distortion fist, and the Nadesico gravity beaming another to death. Combattler finishes the GINN Ryoko finished, and Mazinger moves into the military base permiter.

ENEMY PHASE

A GINN attacks Combattler and is counterkilled with Big Blast as is tradition. Ryoko takes the hit and recieves no damage. Another attacks Ryoko directly, getting counterattacked after she dodges it. Well done. A GINN heads up to the Archangel and attacks it with Heavy Machine Gun (So Laminate Armor won't activate). Let's take a look. It's countering with "Gottfried MK.71"

Kinda took it on the chin, but the counterattack more then makes up for it. Two more GINN's suicide on Combattler V, and another rushes up to Mu and attacks him. Let's take a look at this too, ey?

Wire guided gunbarrels, also known as really big funnels. (Funnels are weapons on a lot of suits in early gundam series, basically tiny guns that fly around independantly of the suit and attack things nearby. Like bees that shoot lasers, lets' say.) Another Ginn attacks, with similar results. Takes out about half of the max HP. More GINN's shuffle around and Creuset is jumping right into the action, attacking Ryoko from halfway across the map with shield vulcan. He still has a 50% chance to hit. Creuset is a pretty nasty pilot to be up against. He hits, and does 900 damage or so. Could be worse.

*record scratch*

IT'S TIME FOR ANOTHER EPISODE OF STUPID THINGS I DO! I accidentally exited the map after this action without saving. Luckily, this doesn't really effect you, the viewer, terribly much. Basically there'll be a few inconsistancies, all the previous screenshots are still perfectly valid and in general basically some robots may be in better or worse states compared to what was happening before. Nothing too much to worry about. Anyway, onward.

TURN FIVE!

Meanwhile, in an alternate reality...

Alright, Strike's got the Sword pack, which prevents him from flying, but gives him a powerful melee attack, called the Schwert Gewehr. Let's take a look.

Stylin. And one shotted a GINN to boot. Not bad at all. Baybull heads down and attacks a GINN with a lasered rifle. He's dodging these guys pretty well suddenly, I wonder why. Not quite acceptable yet, but still better then the 50% or whatever it was last mission. It cripples the GINN, he dodges the counterattack. Mazinger follows up with photon beam and finishes the GINN off. Gets a level in the process, level 8, still no new spirits. The Nadesico heads in to get in position for a hopefully killer MAP gravity blast, as seen here.

Combattler heads in and attacks a GINN to the south of the Nadesico, and is immediately repaired by Aphrodite A. Of note is Combattler is still perfectly servicable without a horde of repairbots following it around, it just means if they're not there, he'll have to actually, you know, use SP on healing and defensive spirits. Anyway, Eiji heads in and plinks at a GINN in the big hopefully soon to be gravity blasted cluster to the right of the Nadesico. Bellzelute heads in and shot launcher's the one combattler weakened, it unfortunatly could not get into position for a MAP, but whatcha gonna do. The Aesti's head to the south of the Nadesico and generally wreak havoc down there. Of note is the fact that Izumi has 76 HP, so I focus her before this. She has a habit of getting knocked down to double digit HP in my playthroughs, it's kind've odd. In the chaos they do not manage to shoot down any of the GINNs, but they do manage to weaken several. It may be time for a firepower upgrade if we intend to keep using the Aesties. More on this in the robot discussion at the end of the chapter. Mu heads down from his starting point and blasts a GINN with Linear Gun.

He dodges the counterattack. Blue Earth heads south and blasts a GINN, Buldy heads south and manages to accomplish nothing.

ENEMY PHASE

Two GINNs attack Combattler and Nadesico, I defend both attacks. Another attacks the Archangel, prompting a sledgehammer counterattack.

Huh. Nifty. Also of note, the Laminate Armor in action. Absorbed most of that Ion Cannon. Nice. The GINN right behind the previous one tries the EXACT SAME THING, and is killed for it. Three more GINN's attack the Nadesico, and are defended against, resulting in zero damage. Two more attack ryoko, she dodges. the only GINN near Mu attacks him, and is killed in the counterattack. He did not hit. Incidentally Linear Gun and Wire Guided Gunbarrels are the only two attacks the Moebius Zero has. Creuset heads towards Mu for... some reason. Maybe they put in some special targeting clauses for Creuset and Mu, that'd be neat.

TURN FIVE!

Missing map&Overview despite remembering taking it. Hmm. Oh well, nothing much had moved from the last turn, everything basically stood still and shot at each other.

None of the five GINN's moved. Goodbye half of the enemy force. Two Aesties in range, I focus them so they won't be mauled in the blast. I also Gain[2x EXP on self] Nadesico and Bless[2x Money on an ally or yourself] it with Katia. It will be getting 2x EXP and Money from five kills. HOLD ON TO YOUR BUTTS.

All five killed, Neither Aesti was hit. Excellent. 8000 money, 550 exp for each person. A normal kill typically rewards 100. Everybody hits level 8 in the Nadesico, and is well on their way to the second one. That MAP attack could not have gone better. With that great success, let's finish this up. Strike Accel's and one shots another GINN with the Schwert Gewehr. Mazinger follows up with a rocket punch, and gains mazinpower in the process. A... little late. Mazinger was kind've crippled in this fight because it can't fly, and the terrain is very rough in the beginning of this map, so it was crawling along more then usual. Movement speed can be a real issue for it. Anyway, Ryoko heads in and finishes off Mazinger's GINN, and now all that's left is Creuset. The Aesties move in as they're closest...

Akito:You son of a bitch! Why did you..?!
Creuset:One of Nergal's Aestivalis... Is it time for me to destroy you?
Huh, Akito has unique dialogue with Creuset. Neat.

Note that did only 1600 or so damage, Creuset is very heavily armored. Akatsuki follows up Akito.

Akatsuki: Rau le Creuset of ZAFT... Rumors say you're a member of the elite, in addition to leading the accomplished Creuset team... This might be rough.
Creuset:Nergal's Aestivalis... You use an Image Feedback System, I take it? Interesting. Let me see the power of a nanomachine enhanced natural!
This is actually sort've an interesting hint at what the similarities between IFS and Co-ordinator are statistically, which we'll get to next mission, because I kind've have to spread out things to talk about. Akatsuki hits. Of note is the fact that Creuset has a very high "Counter" skill. Counter allows an enemy or yourself to take an attack before the opponant, even if they're initiating the attack. It's a very lethal skill in the right hands, and while Creuset doesn't have the firepower to make optimum use of it, he still uses it very well. Anyway, Mu heads in, hoping to land the final hit on Creuset. I cast Focus and Wall for him beforehand because again, Creuset is a pretty nasty boss. Not the nastiest by any means, but he's up there. Naturally, they have dialogue.

Creuset:I'd be all too happy to wipe you out right here, Mu!
Mu:Damn you, Creuset! I won't let you get away with this!

And he misses. Still some interesting battle dialogue. Counter activates AGAIN, also. I'm serious about the high counter level. Eiji heads in next.

Rei:ALARM MESSAGE. ENEMY UNIT APPROACHING AT HIGH SPEED.
Eiji:This one's strong... He's almost as good as Gale. Can I take him on even at full power?
Creuset:Well done, unknown mobile weapon... Just who are you?

Not enough to finish him off. NEXT! Combattler. I wall and Strike him because he had like a 40% chance to hit Creuset. Size modifier + Pilot skill can be a nasty mix at times.

Hyoma:Dammit! Why did you attack the colony, you bastard?! I'll never forgive you!
Creuset:What are you going to do about it? Will you try to stop me with that abominable machine of yours?!
Creuset's kind've a smug bastard. Of note, the way they explain super robots compared to real robots in this super robot wars is typically very advanced technology along with a small team of dedicated engineers/scientists. So in other words, Super robots are typically well acknowledged even by the military "In canon". The fact that Creuset just kinda turns his nose up at them as another sign of his mental state.

Incidentally, Creuset has a lot of unique dialogue. Maybe I'll have to make a bonus update of all of it. Hmm.

Not quite dead...

Creuset:Perhaps I spent too much time playing around... All units, fall back at once! ...It sppears we will need to treat them seriously.

But enough to make him pull back. This was just a test, incidentally, so, yeah. ZAFT is a fairly large organization, make no mistake.

Ruri:ZAFT mobile suits, retreating.
Yurika:Ruri, how's Heliopolis faring?
Ruri:The atmosphere is barely within tolerable levels, but it's fine for the time being. All remaining citizens seem to have already taken refuge in the shelters.
Megumi:Thank goodness!
Murrue:(Their battle strength is way above normal. It seems all those rumors of them going to Mars and back wasn't just talk after all.) Capt. Misumaru, thank you for your assistance. It appears the enemy is waiting for us outside. I planned for us to leave Heliopolis after we finished ascertaining the condition of our ship, but we're short on crew and pilots thanks to the previous battle. May we accompany you, if at all possible?
Natarle:But, Capt. Ramius...
Murrue:Quiet.
Yurika:Hmm... Our ship is still undergoing repairs. We also didn't finish resupplying.
Akatsuki:Why don't we head to the Lunar dock?
Erina:That would be the safest thing to do, yes.
Noal:Can't we just head back to earth and be done with it?
Aki:No, Noal. Look at the data the Chief sent. Those giant aliens are blanketing the atmosphere.
Akatsuki:Yes, the "Demons of the Stratosphere." They're a serious obstacle, to be sure. We can't face them now.
Murrue:Of course. There's a federation base on the moon, too. I'm sure we could get them to cooperate with you if we asked.
Jun:Yurika, ZAFT is coming after us too. At this rate...
Yurika:Understood. Fellow travelers have to look after each other. We'll go with you!
Natarle:(What a mess. We have civilians running around the ship during battle and now those people... And on top of that, they're incredibly strong! I wonder if we're in even more danger now...)

FINALLY! Quite a mission. Still like it a lot.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Anyway, BuCue are those four legged dog-like mechs. S'a mission in that relatively recently translated SD Gundam MMO thing that consists basically of blowing up junkloads of them. Big Zam smash, heeheeheeee.

Oh yeah, guess I got them mixed up with that, along with only partially remembering the mech Creuset was in, CGue, which I didn't mention in the update. I... think Bcues show up later on? I may be getting it mixed up with SRW W, which I've been playing lately.

Also I just realized I missed a map/unit overview image in there, better patch that up. :o EDIT: Or it's just missing, huh. Oh well.

Also for anyone that's enjoying Gundam SEED, don't worry, there's like 3 more missions of it if I recall, before we get to another plot. I don't think they're gonna be as long as this one, dialogue wise, since they were setting up all the SEED plot in this one (On top of me having a lot to say about the series itself, this being the first one I'm terribly familiar with, ON TOP OF AGAIN the fact that gundams are in a kind've interesting place mechanics wise, so there was a lot of technobabble about that), but nontheless you might be ready to wait a few days for mission updates, just in case. SEED, as with most gundam serieses, is kinda wordy.

Woah, the update is already done, what wizardry is this WOAAAHHHH.

Of note, I'm changing up the way people will vote for upgrades, since most people weren't saying specific amounts of pips anyway (And I'm fine with that!), and I feel the extra complexity was probably scaring people away. This new system also prevents me from pasting three huge charts at the end of every post mission dialogue.

So, be sure to re-read the upgrade voting section at the end to see how it works. It's not complicated, but still.

Also maybe be ready to see something semi-special later today. Maybe.

And now a bit of unwinding with the horrific chaos of a military attack on a (mostly) civilian sattelite

On the bridge of the archangel...

Kira: Sai... Everyone... I'm glad you're all right.

Murdoch, Gundam Seed, Kind've a throwaway charecter.

Natarle:Capt. Ramius, would you care to explain?
Mu: Heh, what a surprise! This is Lt. Mu La Flaga, requesting permission to join as a crew member. The ship I was assigned to got destroyed, so...
Murrue:Granted.
Mu:Right, so who is he?
Murrue: ...Just a civilian boy. When the attack came, he was nearby in the factory, so I let him inside the "G" with me. His name is Kira Yamato.
Mu:*chuckle* Is that so?
Murrue:T-Thanks to him, we were able to save the unit, at least.
Mu:I qualified for candidacy with the X Numbers, but I could barely move the damn thing! A total pain in the ass in the simulator, anyway. I... guess that means you're a co-ordinator, huh?
Kira:...Yes.
Murrue:(I knew it...)
Mu is okay with this because he is a cool dude, Murrue is sort've middling on it. and Natarle?

Yep.

Sai:Wait, please!
Tolle:Even if he IS a Coordinator, he isn't an enemy! Didn't you see what he just did?! What are you thinking?!
Miriallia:That's right! Kira's a precious friend of ours!
Murrue:...Also, Heliopolis is neutral ground. It doesn't have anything to do with the PLANT-Federation war, so it isn't out of the question to find a Coordinator onboard. Right?
Kira: Yeah... I AM a First Generation Coordinator, after all.
Which means he was born naturally as a coordinator, rather then made into a coordinator. Which given the amount of amazing things coordinators can do doesn't really make any sense from a biological standpoint, barring a set of amazing cooincidences, but whatever, it's Gundam.

Mu:So your parents were Naturals... Sorry, kid. I just wanted to know, is all. All right, I'm gonna go adjust my Zero. I need a break from this drama.
Murrue:Actually... I wanted to ask if you'd be willing to command this ship, Lt. Flaga.
Mu:I may be more experienced than you, sure, but onthe other hand I don't know the first thing about this ship. You're the Captain, and I'm the pilot. I'll strut my stuff out there on the battlefield, thank you very much.
Murrue:......
Mu:I don't think we have time to hesitate. Even if we tag along with the Nadesico, the Creuset Squadron is waiting outside, and they're bad news. If we're not at full strength, we're gonna be in trouble.

Creuset:Ah, sorry about that. The data from Miguel got from the enemy was certainly helpful. If it weren't for that, I would be the laughingstock of our forces!
Yzak: Tch! Who would have expected those damn Naturals to do so well?
Dearka:We can't fall back now. Let the rest of us scramble next time, Commander.
Creuset: I intended to do so. As you already know, the OS in the new Federation weapons is inadequate. I still don't know how that unit in there managed to move like that. Counting that unit with Phase Shift armor, the new ship and that squadron from Nergal, they're far stronger than anticipated. It is also plainly obvious that we cannot allow them to leave Heliopolis. Once you're finished extracting the data from those 4 units, prepare to scramble!

And it ends, perhaps to make up for the enormous mission. Oh well.

NEW UPGRADE STUFF

Basically, you get three votes. You can either vote for three seperate suits, with seperate stats, for instance

Strike - Armor
Mazinger Z - EN
Layzner - Mobility

or you can choose to hammer it into one robot as such

Strike - Armor
Strike - Mobility
Strike - Weapons

And finally, you can vote for a single category more hen once, as such

Strike - Armor
Strike - Armor
Strike - Armor

So. Annnd we have a booster. Decide who it goes on. Prime candidates are basically any super robot, Mazinger Z is an excellent choice as we saw last mission, most real robots move perfectly fine, but it's got some minor use on a sniping unit, although there are usually better choices for them. It can also be handy on a battleship, if you need to get it close enough to a damaged unit to pull it in, or let some slower units ride along in it. Now, for more detailed stuff. If you're still confused about how the strike works and where it falls in, be sure to look at this thing!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So, with all that, Make your votes! I'll see you in a few days. Also remember, possible surprise later tonight sometime. I'm working on a thing. There will be no surprise unfortunatly as audio recording is trying to get me to spend money I shouldn't be spending.

Mazinger, EN, armor, attack. Also, maybe a current roster or something in roll call post or OP? Maybe just a machine/pilot list or so.

Armour and Weapon on Combattler, because I love how it's named / looks. Also 1 x armour on Strike (the new Gundam?)
