Unusually Peaceful Untamed Wilds
« on: March 31, 2012, 04:53:29 pm »

I'm not sure if this is a bug or not, I'm just asking around.

Has anyone else encountered Untamed Wilds that seem a little...well tamed? Since .06 launched I have made six fortresses across two generated worlds. Each time I pick a site that has "Untamed Wilds." I always double check cause I want to be sure to have to fight something big and nasty or at least have the risk of angry badgers mauling my dwarves. However, five out of six of those fortresses have at worst attracted mosquito men as the most lethal things to date. Most of the time I am just getting ostrich men/women.

I always have savagery set to the highest levels for world gen and, as I have stated before, I double check to make sure the sites are in "Untamed Wilds." I always give these forts a fair shake of at least 8-10 years. Even the elves of my worlds can't seem to muster anything better than a caged raven.

Anyone else experiencing this? Things seeming more calm and tame than what the game tells you they should be?

If you're looking for more of a challenge then you ought to embark on a Terrifying biome. Corpses aren't always the sturdiest of enemies, but they are relentless, especially if they keep reanimating.

Another suggestion, however, would be to remove all of the animal people from the raws, that would leave Giant animals for your savage biomes, which are a greater challenge than furries. But that only applies after a world regen.

As I recall, Savage biomes tend to have more animal-people and giant animals than their non-savage counterparts.

So rather than seeing a flock of regular ostriches milling about, you'd get the ostrich men and women and potentially giant ostriches too.

More dangerous wildlife, if the anthropomorphic and oversized versions don't appeal, can be found in differently-aligned biomes - Unicorns are the obvious candidate in good-aligned areas, since they have their own natural weaponry (they are, after all, horses with bayonets), and pretty much anything living or otherwise in an Evil biome can be a threat.

If the wildlife of your embarks is too dull, try a different area - temperate areas, tropical forests and scorching deserts will have different inhabitants, the latter also potentially an area where the dreaded Giant Desert Scorpions dwell.

And it goes without saying that if you aren't getting any action on the surface, there's plenty of critters in the caverns who'd like to make your dwarves' acquiantance. And then eat them.

More animals have the benign tag now and won't even interrupt your dwarves. Savage wilds aren't so savage anymore. On the flip side, evil areas are WAY more evil.

That's an easy enough fix really. Some time involved to go through all the raws but it wouldn't be difficult.

Think of "savage" to mean "exotic".  Or, the degree to which it's stranger than traditional Earth.  For real danger in the savages, you need evil biomes mainly.  Ogres and harpies and shit.

I wish harpies were dangerous. I trippled them in size and they're still only a threat to completely unarmed dwarves. At this rate I'm going to have to have them bleed deadly neurotoxin.

I have a community fort that's spread across five Untamed Wilds biomes.

So far I've seen quite a few giant creatures:  giant mosquitoes, giant ticks, giant grasshoppers, giant wrens, etc.  None of them have been terribly dangerous yet.

I did mod the game so that animal-people only appear in Good embarks, so I haven't seen any of those.

I think it's not nearly as simple as "what is the biome called?" I'm also rolling in an untamed wilds (next to the ocean, and it gets cold enough to freeze it) and the only critters I've seen are camels, otters, albatrosses, and crabs. Nothing else, at all.

I can also recall this a little. Now'a days when I embark on Untamed Wilds, I mostly get "_______ men". Rarely anything Giant.

To the point where I've begun to mod out some of the more redundant animal men (By adding [GOOD] to their raws). 5 different types of parrot are getting annoying.

It's not like how we had it pre-vampire update. Where there were toga-trains of Giant Badgers.
I miss those days.

It isn't a new Dwarf Fortress version until we're made to fear some kind of regular creature.  Carp, Elephants, Unicorns, Badgers, and now Mosquitos.  I've got 5 dorfBucks on the next one being plagues of groundhogs.

Giant critters are brutal.  I run into giant zombies all the time and they almost always kill a soldier.  Poor troopers.  I support KodKod's suggestion for embarking in a terrifying biome.  You'll wish it was just untamed, lol.

Yeah, but what if you want to embark on a area with real-life savage animals? All those fucking animal men make it impossible.

Corpses are a empty challenge as their "deaths" provide no resources. Wake up and smell the money, people. Everything is motivated by the prospect of claiming resources.

Yeah, but that requires going through ALL the raws and personally taking out the animal-men, which will take forever because Toady didn't put them in a seperate raw for whatever reason.
