Could you guys recommend some roguelikes?
« on: March 31, 2012, 04:42:24 pm »

Hey guys. I have had a huge crave for roguelikes lately! I've always played Dwarf Fortress but I recently started playing Nethack (and I want to try its modded version, Slash'em" and I want to know of others. I don't mind ASCII but I do enjoy having tilesets. I'm not really looking for anything particular but I came up with this random thought of how awesome a sandbox space exploration roguelike would be so if you know of any then please tell!  :D

Prospector RL is the space thing. Infiniverse also recently made a comeback with a new version, and Stellar Edge is kind of inspired by Prospector

Cogmind is one that is being pretty thoroughly played around here...

Link to thread is here...

DoomRL is a pretty nifty RL with a tileset too... though I cant get it to work on my lappy due to openGL problems, but many others rave about it.

My favorites are ZAP'M  (http://roguebasin.roguelikedevelopment.org/index.php/ZapM), which is a Sci-fi version of the classic Nethack, which is a very well-known and my favorite Roguelike of all time.

Cataclysm, there is a thread on this forum, is also a very good one, you live in a town and have to avoid the roaming zombies after you.

Cataclysm sounds interesting, I'll give it a go. A sci-fi Nethack sounds cool too.

Caves of Qud. Try it. There's a thread in this forum about it, with a developer in it.

Angry Birds and Call of Duty are pretty popular.

Maybe it's parasitic. It never loses its flavor because you eventually die from having your nutrients stolen by it.

with tilesets:
Elona - http://homepage3.nifty.com/rfish/index_e.html
Rogue Survivor - http://roguesurvivor.blogspot.de/
Tales of Maj'Eyal - http://te4.org/blogs/darkgod
Unreal World (costs money but has long-ish demo) - http://www.jmp.fi/~smaarane/urw_whatis.html
IVAN - http://ivan.sourceforge.net/

gfx/ascii mix:
Triangle Wizard - http://trianglewizard.webs.com/

ASCII:
Incursion - http://www.incursion-roguelike.net/

i think elona has a topic somewhere in this forum... survivor and tales maybe too.
Incursion is a rouguelike with "dungeons and dragons" ruleset.

mentioned already:
Caves of Qud
Stone Soup Dungeon Crawl
Cataclysm
Cogmind
Prospector RL

others and rougelike-ish:
LambdaRouge - http://lambdarogue.net/
Desktop Dungeons 1 (beta of DD2 on the web too) - http://www.desktopdungeons.net/?page_id=11
Realm of the Mad God (f2p, mmo, cashshop) - http://www.kongregate.com/games/Wild_Shadow/realm-of-the-mad-god
Dungeons of Dredmor (costs money) - http://store.steampowered.com/app/98800/
Mageguild - http://www.lukossoftware.com/
XCOM RL (alpha, dev working more on Cogmind atm)- http://xcomrl.blogspot.de/

----------------------------
well there are tons out there... most of the ones above were probably more "popular?" the last 1-2 years... (some topics in here of some games and some lets plays avaiable too from people floating around bay12) regarding your "sandbox space exploration roguelike" as said already, "prospector rl" comes pretty near.
well theres starfarer too (http://fractalsoftworks.com/) but thats not realy a "classic roguelike" but might be a good space exploration/fight game in some months.

for infos to any games... ask google... and the bay12 search function, quite a few have topics in here.

and here some links to sites where you can find more roguelikes:
http://thelist.roguelikedevelopment.org/
http://www.roguetemple.com/

(sorry for not much game explanations... its late.. tired.. etc...... but atleast links to most of them so you can read the webs/wikis whatever about the game)

Along with what others have mentioned, there's Angband and it's many variants. I never found any like for Angband but hey you might have some fun. For the vanilla version, the setting is somewhere in the same vein as Nethack, but the game itself it plays far differently. I haven't looked extensively, but the vanilla version or at least the variants seem to have at the very least minimal tileset capability.

http://angband.oook.cz/

There's also Xenocide, which is no longer in development as far as I can tell, and is incomplete, but you might get a few kicks out of it. Sci-fi, playing kinda like DoomRL. Kinda. ASCII only.

And there's also AliensRL by the maker of DoomRL. Based on the Alien universe as you might imagine. Plays kinda like DoomRL. ASCII only as far as I know.

Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Elona is really addicting. It's sandbox and you free to do adventuring, questing, looting and fooling around.
I suggest Prospector for sandbox space exploration.

It kinda has to be like Rogue. There are still some versions of it around, download it :)

Rogue was a fully ASCII dungeon romp. You walked around, had stats, found equipment, leveled up and so forth. Think DnD mechanics. Because the graphics were so simple, it focused on gameplay. It featured randomised dungeons and items so that every time you played the game was different. Perma-death was another feature. It's the kind of game that the more you play, the better you know it and the better you become, and go deeper and deeper each time. They're also super hard to beat :)

Pretty much this. If you want the (semi) professional definition, check out the Wikipedia Article.

Angry Birds and Call of Duty are pretty popular.
>asks for roguelikes
>gets recommended two bad games that aren't even roguelikes

EDIT: could someone also define a roguelike to me? I have no clue what makes a roguelike what it is.
A roguelike is by definition like Rogue, which was a computer game. Therefore these sensational ultra popular games are Roguelikes.
