Why does every town seem like half scooby-doo ghost town, half actual town?

Cities grow, they get attacked, people die and buildings get left unoccupied.

He is kinda right, seeing "Abandoned Shops" every place in the city gets old. Makes all the towns feel very empty.

Well the issue is that abandoned houses never get reclaimed. So after several hundred years, you can imagine that things might get a bit crowded.

That sounds like something that should be mentioned on the suggestion forums.

It's more of a bug than anything.

Hence why you run worldgen just long enough to start getting # and * sized towns; they'll generally be full. If you let worldgen run for 1050 years, most civs will die out, same as they have for a long time.

This is, again, a bug.  Abandoned shops are never reclaimed, and the game will inevitably decay towards towns filled exclusively with abandoned shops.  The townspeople all live on top of the castle walls because there's nowhere else to live.

This is a good time to remind everyone, however, that we need more people voting in the worst bug poll who are Adventurer Mode players.

The last version of the poll was deleted, and nobody has yet voted for the "clothing sizes are always human-sized in shops and loot", which makes non-human adventuring so hard.

Toady pays attention to those polls when determining what bugs to quash, so it is important to keep Adventurer Mode represented.
