Help with towers, crosbows and goblin attack
« on: March 31, 2012, 09:56:30 am »

Hi to every one, this is my first post in the forum

I ve been playing for some hours, I have one squad of 7 marksdwarfs equipped wth crosbows and bolts, so far so good, sometimes they do archery traing in their barracks

Planning invasion defences I built walls and a bridge around my fortres entrance, I did 4 towers planing to use them with marksdwarfes, every tower has a height of 3, the last plant is fortified instead of being made of walls, so marksdwarfes can fire through the fortification (this is what I read in the wiki)

Now the goblins came in a large group 10 goblins aproximately, I have my marksdwarfes ready, with wooden bolts but I hope it is enough for killing goblins from a safe place

So I select the squad menue with key "s" and order my markdwarves to move to one tower with key "m", pres enter, they move to he place I selected, then I want to kill a goblin who is near the tower,so I choose again the squad "s" > markdwarfes squad > "k" mark the goblin and pres enter, the squad now has the order "killing ... " but my marksdwarfes do not fire any bolt ! Cannot understand what is happening, I ve checked with key "v" dwarfe by dwarfe they gave bolts in their inventory key "i", they have the crosbow too, so cannot understand whats the problem ? the goblin is not too far away, mabe 6 or 7 squares, maybe is a problem related to the crosbow range ?

the (k) causing them to search for a path to the goblin. If you sealed your fort, they can't find it. Just station them with (m) and they should start firing on anything that looks like a good target. (k) is a bad order for another reason. Dwarfs are very bad at realizing if a target is dead and merrily camp his corpse to see if it'll stand up again, while the rest of the goblins rush into the fort to kill your civvies

some things: fortifications are slightly less useful than walls carved into fortification. Unskilled dwarfs have to stand right next to fortifications to shoot through them and they almost never step up to them to shoot but will stand 1 tile away doing nothing. It is advisable to make a "tower" more like a small walkway where your dwarfs are forced to stand next to the fortificationsIt is also advisable to put a bridge or something like that in front of their line of fire so you can get them all in a good position before it begins: they tend to stop moving as soon as they can shoot, which occasionally results in them all standing in one spot. Well, I say standing...

Recommended 'tower' height is 1 z-level up. Range decreases as you go higher, strange but true. Going up one level is to stop goblins from standing next to the fortifications and shooting back. Some sort of moat is possible too. However, make it a dry moat, usually, more dwarfs fall into the moat than enemies.

The bridge mentioned before has another use. When an elite goblin archer or crossbowgoblin shows up, he'll be able to shoot through the fortifications at your dwarfs and he's deadly in his aim. Raise the bridge to break line of sight and get your squad out of there.

Training crossbow skill is done at an archery range, not a barracks and if you assign barracks AND an archery range the training gets very ineffective.

Jam a door with its corpse and let all the goblins in. Hey, nobody said it had to be a weapon against your enemies.

Wow thats a lot of help, thanks a lot, I will try it now

I had my dwarfes at archery range not barracks

I made what you said, I destroyed the walls on the second flloor and placed my marksdwarfe there with key "m", but goblins passed at a distance of 12 squares and they still didnt fire

I ve checked them again with key "v" and then key "i" (inventory) and they are not carrying any bolts ! not sure if they wasted all the bolts training or they fired the bolts and didnt kill any goblin...

they might have used all at the archery range. I generally train my marksdwarfs on captured goblins. It's faster and so requires less bolts for them to be decently skilled. Do they have quivers? If they don't have quivers I don't think they'll take many bolts with them.

Press r for combat reports to see if they fired anything.

You are right they do not have quivers (only one dwarfe have quiver) oh my god... but I have 3 quivers in my stock, cannot understand why they do not pick the quivers

Well finally my 2 marksman with quivers shooted at goblins, killing some of them because one of the merchants managed to get out of my walls (dont know how, im still trying to figure how the merchant escaped)

Its important to have quivers :D

Thanks a lot for your help
