Pacifist Goblins?
« on: March 31, 2012, 04:06:31 am »

So it's been four years since embarking and the only thing that has troubled my fortress are werebeast attacks, goblin/kobold thieves and snatchers, troublesome wildlife and a constant flow of vampire migrants now piled up in a crypt i built to hold them.

A goblin civ is showing on my civilizations screen, but they haven't attacked at all. Is this normal?

No megabeasts either, no semi megabeasts. INVADERS is turned on, so it can't be that. Are some games just peaceful by the random number generator not rolling up hostile invasions forces?

I'm not an expert, but I believe goblin attacks are based on fortress wealth.  More $$, more attacks.

My last fort was packed full of master engravings and statues and crap, and I was getting FBs every 45 seconds or so in the 13th year.

No goblins though, they were extinct in that world for some reason.

My wealth is at 250 thousand urists. I think it's just luck, if i call it that. My current set of limitations will make fighting off serious threats extremely challenging, but i also want goblinite heh

Four years isn't a very long time. I usually only get attacked that soon if I'm at war with a civ.

How many dwarves do you have ? They also attack at a certain number of dwarves.

I embarked pretty much in sight of a goblin tower, so I got ambushed pretty early. I also started producing very expensive meals (King Cobra eggs, quarry bush leaves, dwarven sugar and cave wheat flour roast, 35 units, very cheap at 10.000 dorf bucks, do I hear 10.000? Yes to the gentleman there, do I hear 11, 11 it is 12, yes 12 and a half thousand to the lady in the leaf dress, do I hear 13? 12 and a half going once, going twice and sold.)

I'm in my 4th year now I think and at 2.35M created wealth, 180k exported. 78 dwarfs, lot of kids though, pop cap was at 60, not getting more migrants.

Ambushes are now usually around four squads and large squads at that, acompanied by about 5 snatchers, so I really think this is about your fort wealth.

Can't wait for two more children to be born so I hit 80 and trigger sieges. That should be a lot of fun!

when you embarked, did you check nearby civs? if so, what did the thing next to goblins look like? a red line? or did it say "no trades." if it says "no trades," that means your civ is at peace with the goblins.

I'm at 130 dwarves, and i thought dwarves were always in a state of informal war with goblins? Regardless of the "Peace" indicator

250k Urists isn't really a whole lot. I tend to limit my wealth production at first to avoid sieges coming too early and at 250k I find that there's just not that much goblin interest. Bump that number of up 1 mil and you might see some activity on your radar.

After making some serrated iron disks with my recently mooded, now Legendary Weaponsmith, the entire world said "Fuck it." and sent everything. EVERYTHING. Four simultaneous ambushes, a FB and five billion thieves/child nappers.

This was at the end of Year 2, mind you.

It isn't a new Dwarf Fortress version until we're made to fear some kind of regular creature.  Carp, Elephants, Unicorns, Badgers, and now Mosquitos.  I've got 5 dorfBucks on the next one being plagues of groundhogs.

I suppose this is an unintended result of my current limitation set. Wood is used for about everything, not exactly a very valuable material. Well at least it's peaceful in my woodland home!

It's definitely your population.  [PROGRESS_TRIGGER_POP_SIEGE:3] is the entity_default for goblins which means 80 pop to get a siege.

You could lower it to 0 or 1 (or maybe 2) in your save and reload, if you want to see goblin attacks.  Or up your pop cap.

I assumed you have enough dwarfs for some reason.  My bad.

"How about we raid that place?"
"It's made from wood, doubt there will be anything valuable. Probably exiled elf tribe or something."
"Yeah, let's go siege that dwarf fort a bit further, there is bound to be loot there."

If you're getting snatchers, you can get sieged.

Build your fortress wealth, and export things too. Those are the things that draw invaders.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.
