Captain of Guard

Could someone tell me what this position does, and what it requires, please?

You should really look to the wilderness for your stealth ideas, it has been doing it much longer than you have after all. Take squids for example, that ink trick works pretty well, and in water too! So you just sneak into the dam upsteam, dump several megatons of distressed squid into it, then break the dam. Boom, you suddenly have enough water-proof stealth for a whole city!

He's like the Sherrif, except he also has a squad under him to assist with keeping the peace. They also function as a military squad. Also, if I recall, he has slightly higher room requirements.

I never appoint him. All he does is damage and jail your own dwarfs for not meeting mandates and such. Makes the baron happy though.

Better to have one (and a squad equipped with wood or bone crossbows) than to let the hammerer handle justice though, as an alive but in jail weaponsmitth is way better than one with no head.

Just give him a candy hammer for the hammerer, problem solved

Jee wilikers, I think Highmax is near invulnerable, must have been dunked in the river styx like achilles was.
Just make sure he wears a boot.

Unsolves the issue of the Hammerer actually executing dangerous individuals you do want dead though...

I give my guard weapons and armor. They may damage or kill innocent dwarves, but they're also pretty good at hunting down berserk dwarves before they can do much damage.

Any militia can do that. The game pauses and centers on them. Just use the squads menu and issue a kill order.
