It's not slow thinking, it's just the overriding desire to cause senseless death for the greater good.

You mean, remarkable? :P

The only bad thing about losing a sacrifice miner is if you forgot to forbid a quality magma-safe pick before (s)he picked it up.

That and miners are one of the most useful kinds of dwarf.

Oh no, you tell all your REAL miners to take a nice vacation. Enjoy the legendary dining room they carved out. Enjoy the fine quarters they dug for themselves. Drink. Mostly, drink and eat.

Gotta agree with Ross on this one. Easiest way to breach the volcano?

Hey, Urist McLegendaryCheesemaker, got a new job for you. Here's your pick.

And remember to have a few nobles near the magma pipe.

The volcano goes up 55 Z-levels from my main floor and I want to be able to have both magma forges AND flood the world with magma.

build a shaft up the side of the volcano, with access stairs on the OUTSIDE of the shaft. At the very top, channel the lip of the crater to allow the magma to flow into the shaft. Once your reservoir underneath the furnaces is full, dig several more channels at various points around the lip of the crater. This will, slowly but surely, flood the entire great outdoors of your map with lava.

Or I could simply build a magma reservoir, two floodgates, two levers, and sacrifice a dwarf to Armok where I want my forges to be.

I was considering making a 54 Z-level glass volcano over the front drawbridge, though, so your idea will be considered. :)

I've already got a WIP world flood. Boy it sure is taking it's sweet time though:

Build pumps. And magma land mines. PRESSURIZE THE FLOOD.

I haven't lost a miner since 34.05, embarking on volcanoes exlusively.

Tap it with a pair of diagonals, the miner will escape every time.

##. #          # = wall
##. #          .  = floor
#. ##          ~ = magma
~###          ^^^^ Just to prevent any possible confusion ;-)

Did 24 taps on 1 volcano in a row, just to test it's effectiveness. No other designations in the entire fort, by the way. He would stand at the end of the hall, dig the diagonal, and run when mamga started filling it.

I make a plumbing level under my magma shop level, build all but 1 shop with impassable tile over openings, send in the miner, once he's out, I build the last shop. So far the fire crabs and imps are staying at bay.

Also, no pressure like water, it won't rise a z-level, but diagonals do seem to slow it down quite a bit, enough the dwarf escapes without issue.
