Magma Pipes
« on: March 30, 2012, 06:43:03 pm »

So I've embarked in a nice place with a volcano. I'm looking to use magma for magma workshops (natch). If the workshops are lower than the top level of the volcano, do I have to worry about Magma flooding into my workspace?

My plan is to build a small reservoir underneath the area I'm using for the magma workshops, so that I can just channel a hole and then pop the workshop on top.

as long as you don't make a stupid mistake such as mining the wall into the lava or removing the floor altogether its good, this design is safe as far as i know (idk yet, im still gening a larger world at max time for 4.0.6(?))

I do this all the time! The safe way to get magma without killing the miner is to make a shaft that goes down to the magma reservoir, and dig a channel from the top layer of the volcano to the pipe opening.

there's nothing to worry about.  Just build some redundant doors.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

Magma doesn't pressurize naturally like water does, so you should have no problems.

I've had so much hilarity with trying to get magma from a volcano at a lower level than the volcano lip...

Once spent an hour or so channeling and setting up a magma river from z-1 the volcano top across the entire 3x3 map, to sort of have a giant Dwarven War Factory thing going on.  Then, I derped out and channeled in a bad spot, queue three mining dwarves flinging themselves out of the pit on fire, igniting half the map into a massive fiery apocalypse which also burned all the wooden objects I had in my main stockpile, two dwarves ran into a small canyon as the fire raged toward them, clawing at the dirt wall at the end of the canyon to no avail...

Three more burning deaths and the remaining dwarves all tantrumed and either pushed each other into the magma river (man, I guess above ground, it should be called a lava river), flung themselves into it, or tossed all my furniture in it, and then my fortress crumbled to its end.

Just another day in Dwarf Fortress.  The lesson is, if you're digging at a z level lower than the volcano rim, channel down one space further, leaving an up ramp so your miners can flee before catching fire and OMG !!Pig Tail Fiber Socks!!

Set up a high-altitude stone box for growing outdoor crops, then pump some magma up to a slightly less high level and seal the fort. It might take some time, but you may enjoy your red sea!

The safe way to drain magma from below is the same as the safe way to drain the ocean from below - there is a ramp/bridge exploit.

Doing it from the side, however, is difficult to do safely.  I've heard that having the miner that breaches the magma do it while standing on a grate, allowing the magma to drain down and fill it before flowing after him, improves survivability a bit.

Make a single channel behind him and fill it with 3/7 water that he has to run through to escape the advancing magma. It should extinguish the fire on him as he runs out?

Only 7/7'll extinguish the fire

I've tapped straight into a volcano below the lip and without safety measures plenty of times and only ever had one injured miner because of it. Then again, maybe I just get lucky.

safe way to get magma

What are you, an elf?

without killing the miner

Magma is a form of ‼dwarven birth control‼ and the mechanism by which immigrants become useful additions to the fort.
