(since it reverts to cobble, then again it's the whole chore of making more smoothstone, unless you want to waste Silk Touch)
Or use Thermal Expansion's Igneous Extruder to make smoothstone.
Or the Philosopher's stone to change cobble to smooth.
Or Industrial Craft's Mining Laser on Superheat mode to turn it from cobble to smooth.
Or the Pickaxe of the Core from Thaumcraft.

This is the mods thread after all, we've plenty of options :P

That being said, I agree with you on Smoothstone, I like my buildings to look like they were constructed, not like they eroded into position.

IC2 Reinforced Stone all the way.  Simply because I hate creepers.

On that note, does anyone know if obsidian panels/covers are explosion proof?

If it's SSP, there's mods that can disable creeper terrain damage, otherwise, ‼Science‼ it.

For TNT you need slightly less than a half block of obsy I think. ITNT needs a half.
Not sure about creepers.

Creeper explosions are weaker then TNT explosions, so you should be fine with... triple cover, or whatever its called.

CF foam is also explosion proof.

Is there any way to easily get large quantities of it? The process is cool up until you need water, then if you don't want to drag and drop buckets to your crafting area for each single item, you have to use those water cells, and end up using large quantities of tin (not to mention finding a water spot and clicking with the cells constantly and waiting for a refill... pumps are also annoying if I want to automate this last part).

Project table =/= autocrafting table. You can easily set up an actual autocrafting system using RP2 deployers tough. I used them for a water reactor, but a crafting system should not differ too much.

You should change the outside material to be not only sandstone, it looks kind of ugly. You could use smoothened sandstone for the edges. (just craft 4 sandstone in a square for 4 smooth sandstone)

May I suggest logs? I had good experience with logs on sandstone , but that was another texture pack. not sure if it would look good in vanilla.

Pine logs tend to look pretty nice with Sandstone.
