Not exactly. More like "what if" ore veins were more compact and rare, a bit like TFC, but each block lasted for more than a single mining action.

You wouldn't have to build anything. But if this was some sort of base mod, like an API, others could make machines if they wanted it, and these machines wouldn't have to remove large chunks of scenery or more around, they'd just be static, multi-block or not. "Vanilla" you'd just use a pick.
Maybe people would even actually use carts for mining instead of just making rollercoasters with them (no much point in making a whole track if the "vein" you're using disappears after 10 minutes of use).

Yeah. The main issue with both Dwarf Fortress and Minecraft is that mining out large amounts of rock happens in a short amount of time, while in reality it would take decades of work in the real world to accomplish the same goal. So things like minecarts end up being used less for ore and more for transportation of people or other large volume goods.

It'd be interesting to have a block in minecraft that held some number of sub-blocks that got dropped during mining until all of them were gone, at which point it'd disappear.

I guess that would have been made before already, if not for the difficulty of making the sub-blocks disappear in an aesthetically pleasing order.

You could probably have it just remember its 'damage level' and show increasing cracks as sub-blocks are dropped. Not ideal, but it'd work pretty well for minecraft, I think.

I suppose you could just do something which, on ore block breaking, had a chance of replacing itself with another block so as you mined it ore blocks would keep dropping until you rolled low enough that it didn't replace.

Or better yet, actually make it realistic in its ore generation. Those mines actually would have tunnels going all over down underground. It's just that there would be actual veins and seams and such of the materials. Gregtech actually represents it decently with its Bauxite mineral. It only occurs in certain biomes (representing different rock types), and which found, you typically find large clusters of it.
IRL:
A coal seam has a large amount of coal, pretty much all in one giant layer which can span a very large area of ground. Similar to this (large) seam exposed in the image in this article: http://www.odt.co.nz/the-regions/north-otago/71639/coal-seam-exposed-quarry
Iron can come in veins, which I think are typically smaller, but more like this: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e2/20100927_Iron_ore_veins_and_beds_Marmaritsa_Rhodope_Thrace_Greece_1.jpg

The important thing, though, is that they are regionally based. Switching over minecraft to a more realistic dstribution, you wouldn't have any given chunk with all minerals in it. But those areas which did have it would occur in seams, veins, and other relatively large deposits, which would have a fairly large underground extent; and probably have long, winding connections through the rocks. Most common materials could thus be found pretty much by hitting a vein, then following it as it winds its way through the rock layers.

There already is a mod which makes ore spawn in realistic veins, so if thats all you want then you're covered.

I'm alright with more realistic distributions. The problem is that doesn't fix the issue, which is that mining is basically making HUGE holes in the ground spanning hundreds of meters in basically minutes. Even having realistic veins like in that mod, you can always count the time it takes to mine in minutes or at most hours.

I don't mind the actual time-to-ore ratio of current Minecraft, but the amount of space covered is just silly. I'm sure you can mine enough coal to last you days in a tiny furnace by mining a smallish mine wall. Taking down an entire mountainside in a couple of hours for coal... eh...

Basically I would do it like Wurm Online, but only for ores, not for stone.

Having the counter of "uses left" is more or less what I'm talking about.

Limbo is slightly more fun when you have the Ars Magica Mod installed... Those Mages built everywhere...

I'm assuming that's the Limbo from Dimension Doors, and not some other mod I can't think of?

I remember Limbo. I assumed "portals at the bottom of the world take you back" to mean that falling out of the world would take you back. I was kinda wrong. >:c

Dimension Door Mod actually hates people playing it on Hardcore mode. You don't go to Limbo, you just die...
