High Boots now foreign?
« on: March 30, 2012, 06:10:05 am »

Hi guys,

I just realized in the uniform screen that high boots are listed as foreign now.
Umm did I miss something?

your home civ doesn't know how to make them, kind of annoying but it happens sometimes.

Yes you missed reasoning about the situation. And I think it's mentioned in the magmawiki as well. Sometimes some items which seem standard are foreign and vice versa. I've had a civilization without high boots but with togas.  ::)

i thought all that stuff was in the raws.  High boots were foreign for a few versions of DF2010, but were added back in during vanilla.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

IMO, that's way worse, and I had it happen today, actually. Thankfully, one of the other kingdoms on the map had iron so I didn't need to re-gen, but seriously, wtf kind of dwarves can't handle iron?

Keep in mind that the dwarves are essentially alcoholic toddlers, and act accordingly.

It isn't that they can't handle iron.  It is that they have no access to iron ores.  You can't trade something you don't have.

It's because of this:

Code: (from entity_default, under MOUNTAIN) [Select]
[SHOES:ITEM_SHOES_BOOTS:COMMON]
The entry is for high boots. COMMON means that they almost always show up, but it's not guaranteed. If you want to make sure you always have high boots, you can change COMMON to FORCED and regen your world.

I'm amazed that Forced was the first person to post the truth...

High boots are common, low boots are forced.  You will always get low boots, but you will most often get high boots as well.

It's worth noting that greaves and high boots both cover the same area, so you don't specifically need high boots to protect the legs.

But you do need them to be stylin'est dwarves this side of the mountainhomes. Just because they're meant for protection doesn't mean your dwarves can't look faaaabulous.

I think we've already confirmed that adamantine is such a material that it actually refractors light.  It may also contain anti-gravity properties that, due to its peculiar density and structure, allow it to float upwards.  This considered, your adamantine-clad axedwarf will bounce around like a fluorescent blue astronaut that glows in bright rainbows.  There is nothing quite as fabulous.

Low boots aren't FORCED, actually, they're just COMMON. I don't think anything is FORCED in any of the vanilla entities. I think that the game does checks along the lines of making sure that an entity always has at least one available piece of foot armor, though, so I don't think it's possible to ever end up with a civilization of poor little shoeless dwarves.

The first Dwarven Rainbow Sparkle Brigade proved to be a stunning success story. The goblins were so overcome by the sight of the Candy-armoured dwarves and their traditional war dance that they simply stood in awe whilst the dwarves put them down.

Later, we caught up with a member of the Rainbow Sparkle Brigade who had this to say:

"Them Goblins got SERVED."
