Even with 550 years of history, the dragons that have come were pushovers.  The upside? Dragon Soap.  I like to imagine my dwarves on top of the battlements, scrubbing their armpits mockingly as the next dragon comes over the hill.

On the other hand, they're much more deadly when reanimated.  Zombie dragons don't bother with breath weapons, they just bite dwarf limbs off.  I lost three dwarves to one of those, in contrast to the 0 I've lost to three live dragons.

Too bad they never brought me a Giant Desert Scorpion yet. I want one guarding the entrance to my fort, though I guess a GCS would work too.

no you dont. GDS dont have very good perception, so they just let snatchers and thieves through. the only way to make them effective at guarding is to group them with hunting dogs. that way, the dogs do the spotting, and the scorpions do the fighting. also, try to take careful care of them. they dont breed without altering the raws, and a couple good hammer blows can cripple or kill them easily. the plus side is, they can wrestle weapons and armor away from foes, if they grab on in the right places.

Not if you pasture a wall of GDS, there'd be no way to path through them without going under them ^-^

For all the shit people give elves, the pointy-ears sure have some serious balls, being abl to effortlessly tame any animal, no matter how violent or dangerous.

DF elves are strange, though. I don't remember any elf myths that involve them eating sentient beings, and I think DF really over-exxagerated their love of nature.

Giant Desert Scorpions is just a wiki troll thing. 5 embarks in their biome, no sightings.

It's all random whether you get them or not. I've gotten them on the embark screen both in .31 and .34.6, through embarking on multiple savage biomes (3 in both cases). It ended hilariously both times.

You're not implying that they don't exist, right? Because they most certainly do and taming them is very worthwhile, especially when one of them wrestles an iron battle axe out of the hands of a goblin and starts dismembering other invaders with it.

Elves in my current fort have been disappointing in terms of beasties, but they have brought sunshine and sun berries (and a fwuffy wambwew in a cage) so I'm hoping for some unicorns.   :P

obviously you do not know what you are talking about. Have you ever played something else than 0.34 in a savage desert ?

GDS exist, it's just they're far less likely to happen with the assload of new animals, giant animals and animal men in DF 0.34.xx. Hell I've had one from the elves in 0.34.

Especially that they only happen in savage biomes, where you REALLY feel the weight of all these animals.

If you're still not convinced, open up creature_savage_tropical.txt and search for "scorpion."

I've had GDS in 31.25, but it was early in the embark so I thought it best to let them go. I also was a bit new to DF. Now I wantsssss

Oh, and you should investigate some dwarf fortress lore. Some things are so unexpected or weird, they may sound false, but many things happen, strange things. Quantum storage and water reactors are just one example. There are antmen and weirder. A scorpion that grasps an axe out of someones hand and starts to use it is easy to believe in comparison.

read some dwarven science threads. This whole forum is full of maniacs geniuses who wonder what happens when they do this, just to find out (ooh, so it is not viable to make your dwarfs fireproof by melting away their fat a little at a time)

For example, would you believe the most deadly new creature is the giant sponge?
