Will the beehives work if the fortifications are a z-level above them and they have just a normal wall on their own level? If you don't feel like setting up all 40 hives, just a ground floor and a floor just a bit higher with fortifications would work. Would you need more than 1 tile (in the middle for example) not floored over for it to count as outdoor access? if it's just that one tile, you'll be pretty much safe from flying archers too.

Jam a door with its corpse and let all the goblins in. Hey, nobody said it had to be a weapon against your enemies.

You could conceivably farm bees in hell.

I seriously hope someone tries this.

But what about flying archers (e.g. goblin bowmen on mounts)!? They can get inside your first curtain wall, and then shoot at the bees!

THOSE POOR BEES!

Unless the goblin is tied in there really good spooking the mount with a bee sting or even the goblin being stung should cause one or both of them to fall... I'd use the top floor of this as a sniper tower, couple of legendary doors as the only way in from the top should do it.

That would make an interesting (at least to me) combat report.

I'm sad to say I have never had the joy of being assaulted by fliers, but if I did I would think it fitting that they attacked my bee keeping tower first.

Perhaps abundance of immigrants + modded lethal bee sting + general acceptance of dwarven death related to beekeeping could supplicate to a grand new circle of death, Hakuna Matata.

you could also make the wall 2 z levels high and put the fortifications on the second z level that way anything on the 1st z level couldn't shoot in.

This was my first thought as well. Solution? Offset double walls with fortifications. Those bees can navigate anything, and now they can't be shot. At least not until they leave the security of the fort.

(Oh man, I WISH that goblins would chase bees, or vice versa... WEAPONIZED BEES.)

For added security (to protect against marksgoblins) couldn't you put another wall around the fortifications (with a space between them)?

You could probably do that if you wanted.  My plan is to just call all the dwarves into the main defensive burrow when a siege strikes; these constructions aren't part of the burrow.  Maybe turn beekeeping off on the beekeeper while a siege with archers shows up too.
Since bees fly, you could also have the structure have a higher ceiling. The ground level uses regular walls, but the upper area uses fortifications instead.

I put my beehives underground with a floor grate above them. Does that count?
