Has become used to nudity
« on: March 29, 2012, 09:05:53 pm »

Similar to how becoming used to tragedy works, if a dwarf continually gets bad thoughts about nakedness then those thoughts become progressively less severe until they stop altogether.  Likewise, if everyone in the fort is wearing few or no clothes then dwarves that grow up there should be alright with it. Or if everybody has lost their clothes then there is no reason to be upset.

Similar to how becoming used to tragedy works, if a dwarf continually gets bad thoughts about naked ness then those thoughts become progressively less ever until they stop altogether.  Likewise, if everyone in the fort is wearing few or no clothes then dwarves that grow up there should be alright with it. I think it should be the other way: if other dwarves are consistantly nude, the dwarf becomes used to nudity. This better simulates a "social norm".

Makes sense to me. As far as I know poor peasants and serfs used to work naked or mostly naked since clothes were expensive and it ran the risk of damage.
Nobles should always demand the finest clothes however and could even be offended by the sight of poor grimey naked servants running around. Suppose we'll have to wait untill the Dwarven social system and economy are fleshed out a bit more for that.

This thread also reminded me how how much I'm looking foward to the day when I can strip my military Dwarves naked, get them to paint themselves blue and send them into battle with wooden shields and iron swords.

Fixed typos in first post.

I'd like to have this happen in history creation already, so you have the ocassional civ of nudists.

Maybe it should be changed so that nude dwarves get bad thoughts from seeing clothed dwarves and vice versa.

That would be more difficult thing to program in.

"Welcome to Fort Buttnaked, please dump your clothes before entering."

...but if not for socks, what's there for the dwarves to obsess over? ???

Certainly you could argue that DF is a lot like The Sims, only... you know... with more vomit and decapitation.
If you launch a wooden mine cart towards the ocean at a sufficient speed, you can have your entire dwarf sail away in an ark.

That one -donkey tallow roast- just behind the fortifications where the goblin army is massing.

Clearly, this represents six side-by-side wheelbarrows, as indicated by the right half of the icon.  The left half indicates they are carrying babies with hats in these wheelbarrows.

Presumably, they are lining up to dump them into the baby furnaces.

Rather than sight, maybe talking to clothed dwarves (this already being programmed). This also makes sense because less sociable people (like the mechanics stuck in the mechanics burrow) shouldn't care as much.

Somehow, that fills me more with dread than anticipation.  It's like being told that someone's exhuming your favorite grandparent and they're going to try to make her into a cyborg stripper.

*thumbs up*

I have to say, I like that idea.  On the grounds that I don't like the other, Toady's idea.

This nudity sadness is bad mojo.  A dwarf should be happy with a mug of ale and a trimmed beard.  That's it.  They are hairy little buggers anyway. Won't that cover everything that needs covering?

There has gotta be another driving factor for the AI to upgrade attire, like vanity(increased value), toughness(increased durability), or weather(wool or silk, cold or warm).  Something else beside starkassedness, please.  Knutor
