Sadly, there is no knowledge to be mined. Unless the legendary Quaesitum Mines of Langoria turn out to be more than legendary, you're stuck with pure physical substances. Earth is very sorry.

Meanwhile, you do MINE ALL THE THINGS! You get very into it and find a substantial haul. Tara comments on your good luck.

(+6 Redstone, +2 Copper, +2 Tin)

When you finally sit down to take a break, you finally take that there Mechanics Textbook and figure out what the hell this is all about. Tara helpfully directs you to the section on electrical mechanics. Ah, yes. Those crystals are going to come in handy. Apparently, some of them generate electricity when heated, including by friction of movement. According to the book, these are called Langston crystals. And no, Tara doesn't have a better name either. She does have quite a few of these crystals, though.

(Basically a stand-in for a generator assembly. So many electromagnets! :P Anywho, it may be worthwhile to note that crystals come in Large size and split into 10 Mediums, which each split into 10 Small which each split into 10 Tiny which can each be ground into 10 Powdered units. Most crystals still work when split apart or even powdered.)

EDIT: When asked about your idea of getting an engraving, the Mechanic just shrugs. "He'll be glad to take your money."

You muck about in the caverns some more. Tara points out that she has some herself, but more are always better, right?

+2 Large Crystals!
+1 Large 'Langston' Crystal!

....Finally, Tara demands that you come back up and actually do some mechanics before her textbook falls to pieces. Oh dear.

We must gain mechanical skills, how else are we to make our army?

Mine for mechanics
I'm going to have to change the title, aren't I. :P
Anywho.
----
You sigh and nod, putting away the pickaxe and following Tara back up into Starta, and of course to the MECHANICS WORKSHOP! Mmm, fairly cozy little place. But full of things one needs to do work. And some of the things you need to make your materials. After all, you can't just go around buying sheet metal out here.

Now, Tara does give you a pretest. YOU ARE GIVEN!

10! Units of powdered 'Langston' crystal. For reference, a unit of such is 1 cm3.
100! Units of powdered 'conductor' crystal.
20! Ingots of refined iron. Not quite steel, but a little better than what you've got.
20! Ingots of straight bronze: copper and tin.
20! Ingots of brass: copper and zinc. Approximately 7 parts copper to 3 parts zinc, if you care. Fairly versatile that way.
Access! To the forge, a set of machine tools, and some other stuff. Basic stuff for working with metal really. Sadly, no welding for you. (Except forge welding.)

You must! Create a useful machine! Preferably one that doesn't suck. Feel free to take your time, but it WILL be graded. Tara just prefers to get something useful out of this. :P
