Confirmed. Whatever you're trying to do with this world it's using far too much RAM and crashes. With normal world gens I never even got halfway.

Thanks KodKod for taking the time to check.  That world will gen with different seeds so it seems a bit like russian roulette.  Some seeds use more ram than others.  It would be nice if we could pinpoint what exactly causes it though.

Let me know if you find anything amazing. I have been looking myself and found a few epic moments, but there is just SO MUCH its easy to miss something

Here are the three currently active wars.

Humans vs Goblins
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Goblins vs Dwarfs.  Interestingly enough, although this is a 900 yr + long war, there have been numerous other wars between this goblin and dwarf civ during the time this war was active, so it may be a bug/error.  Lots of gobs and dwarfs dead in those other wars.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Elf-Dwarf war, ongoing.  The dwarves have captured several forest retreats.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This particular dwarf civ has 22k dwarves, 12k goblins, and 237 elves as members.

I just finished genning a monster of my own on my 3.5y/old laptop.
Large world, 1050yrs, max sites, civs, beasts, savagery, minerals

Windows Vista 32-bit
Intel Core2 Duo 2.4GHz
4.00GB RAM

It took a little over three hours, with around 15s/year in the last fifty years.
I only ever showed about 2.2GB RAM in use, with the DF process taking <1.5GB

The Domain of Dragons

EDIT: Mine also never left the Age of Myth.

KodKod - what PC specs are you working on?

Windows 7 64bit.
Intel Core i5-2500k.
8GB RAM.
Weird, those specs look like mine.
the ram wont matter tough, since it doesnt 1gb for you.
how much Ghz?
Me 2.27
And its lockin up around 150
Selfquote here, finished genning yesterday evening, must have taken 2 hours or so, i didnt count, i didnt modify ram, but i managed to gen a large world that has 1050 years of history.

How that is freaking awesome,
What program are you using to show the legends and the warts/ That is amazing to see it like that.

That program is Legends Viewer, otherwise known as the best thing since sliced Dwarf Fortress.

I think the REAL thing to do now, is to start seeing how DWARF we can mess with the worlds. raising and mucking with the variables...

I remember one early 40d World I genned where I  did "Something" that caused every single mountain range in the world to be "Sinister"

Well, if we're going to do "Weird things I genned in 40d" I think my "ice age" map is a strong contender. I made a couple of changes to the parameters but the main change was to lower minimum and maximum temp, in an ill conceived attempt at an ice planet. The result was... anomalous to say the least. Vast expanses of ice, tundra and mountains, deathly cold, but amongst the tundra there were islands of normal terrain, burning. The humans and elves lived in the islands of fire while the dwarves and goblins lived in the mountains of ice. !!Fun!! fact, when DF says it's "Burning" hot, it means it literally.

On topic, my worlds usually bomb out around ~700 at which point my computer has a nervous break down. Note that this is on my Mac with 4GB of ram, haven't tried on Windows yet.

Experimenting with a new world..
Found a sight which has FUN written all over it.

A volcano, In a frozen sea... next to a 50zlevel mountain, with TWO Magma pipes right next to it down bellow AND Candy columns poking up through the third level.

FUN!!!

You lucky bastard. I wish I could even find a magma pipe and candy that doesn't bring to much fun.

Reminds me of an awesome world I had for 31.25
http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=4308
Now I must try to get something like it again...
Is it still possible to make a 10,000 year world? I did it once in 31.25, but it took my ultra-pc overnight.

OK here are some screencaps along with save file:
http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=6051

Here are all there pipes in one shot
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And here is the Volcano surrounded
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This could be a very very good map for !!SCIENCE!!
Each magma pipe breaches a different layer of the Underworld.
The whole ocean melts at once which will cause water to pour into the volcano and seal it over. And then it will all refreeze in winter.

Hmmm... I started running pocket worlds exclusively becuase since .34.01 large worlds take over a minute to save, and I use seasonal autosave. With a pocket world, it's only 5 seconds to save. Couldn't handle the game pausing to save every season, a minute is a long time:p

Has this improved any for anyone? It's the same for me on a 6 month old Toshiba, and a 3 year old Dell, so I assume it's not just me.

I genned a 10,000 year-old world a few weeks ago on 34.05, another that was about 8,800.  Both were Medium Island.  I'd upload it to DFFD, but it was slightly modded, like playable humans, etc., but was still in the Age of Myth (I always stop worldgen at 50% megabeast deaths... or "megadeths").  That's actually the main thing that keeps my worlds from going long, unless I remember to set the caves high enough for the megabeasts to meet up and make babies.

I could gen some long vanilla worlds for people and upload them, I guess.

Megabeasts hardly ever died in 31.25. 10,000 large world was still age of myth.
If you could gen some worlds, though, that would be awesome. Playable humans even more so.

I don't understand why people are  talking about crashes due to too mucch memory being use. Why wouldn't a swap file work?
