If you do manage to catch one...
This may be a stupid question but... how do you catch a critter that lives in magma? (never seen them walk on solid ground)

I'd like to debunk the idea that they don't leave the magma. I had a Magma Crab climb out of a magma channel to the level above and chase a hauler down the corridor. Winged him in the leg before he made it up the stairs, at which point I guess the crab got cold and stopped chasing.

Traditional trapping procedure is to spam traps in an area where critters frequently move through, and then wait.  For magma crabs, that means making a clean path out of the magma sea and into the overworld, so they'll want to path, and then just putting cages in the entrance.

Also, taming science states that 2nd generation critters are domestic.  If you train them while they're still in the child stage, they grow up domestic.

I've managed to catch them by digging a passage to the magma that they can climb up, and placing cage traps.  They live in magma, but they're perfectly willing to come out of the magma to attack your dwarves.

Treat them like cavern critters.  If given a usable path, they will come try and wreck your fort.

Just make sure you are taking a video of when the first generation of Magma Crabs break their taming and start throwing lethal rocks about in the middle of your fortress.

That would be a joy to see.

Missed half the thread?  You just make a path, they'll come to you eventually.

I had crabs come from the magma sea to the top of a volcano vent like 200 z levels above... killing my dwarfs from 10-15 z lvls down hurling up rocks. They will come if you build it, they will come..., just be sure to have a maze with a drawbridge at the end near the lava ready to shut it off so you don't get over-run with the little buggers.

Oh and are they [PET_EXOTIC] in 34.06 by default now?

Um, maybe you misunderstand the term "lure"?  Making a path is not actively "luring" them.  Will Tuna mentioned "lure crabs" as a step distinct from digging a path for them.

The wiki says that crabs in pipes and volcanos are easily dealt with by building a floor over the volcano and then dropping it on the little bastards. Of course, this would involve sending your masons into harm's way, so consider drafting some new peasant masons.
