This still doesn't solve my problem of stopping excess Goblins being pitted. How can I stop Goblins outside my pitting room stockpile being pitted? Will removing the stockpiles remove their names from the list of Goblins that can be pitted? If so that would sort the problem.

Let's see, 300 goblins, take the square root...

Ok, Just make a 18x18 pitting room and you won't have any problems. All of them will fit in the pitting room. Actually, 17x18 would be good enough.

Pitting room is currently 11x11, its full of Gobbos and its hardly made a dent on my stocks, perhaps 300 was too low an estimate. 18 x 18 you say, does that take into account each pitting hole? Looks to like it'll need to be bigger, for my needs at least. Thing is my current pitting room is atop a gleaming white Rock Salt, Alunite and Quartzite tower so extending the pitting room is going to be quite the task if that is indeed the only solution to my problem.

No way man, they deserve only the strong arms and gnashing teeth of my dwarfs (all my dwarfs are fully steel clad Biters and Wrestlers).

Couldn't you just make a quantum stockpile around the holes? You'd have to set your cage stockpiles not to accept goblin cages, but it would be a better solution than digging out half a z-level.

Hmm, custom goblin stockpiles around the pitting holes which take from bigger cage stockpiles might also work.

I wonder if the game has become odd.

Maybe the following will help.

Setup:
1. A huge animal stockpile (hereafter referred to as "overflow") in a room with doors to deny access.
  a. The overflow doesn't have to accept empty cages, but if it doesn't, you'll need one somewhere that does.
2. The Mass Pitting System, with the animal stockpile taking from the overflow stockpile.

Algorithm:
1. Wait for dwarves to transfer goblin cages from the overflow to the pitting room.
2. Lock the doors to the overflow area.
3. Pit.
  a. First time through: do the mass pit thing.
  b. Following iterations: enable the pit zone.
4. Disable the pit zone with a few keystrokes.
5. Open access to the goblin cages in the overflow area.
6. Repeat steps 1, 2, 4, and 5 until you're out of goblins.  Then catch more goblins.

I haven't tried this, and dwarves are stupid, so you might want to construct a single gobbo cage in a closet somewhere and lock the door.  After mass-pitting and disabling the pit zone, unlock this door first, and see if any dwarves go to pit the only accessable goblin.

EDIT: It's also possible that the zone will forget what's supposed to be pitted in it when you diable/re-enable it, but at least you won't have to examine the cages and pick through the list of goblin names.

Quantum stockpile will probably work, never bothered with them, but i'll give it a go. Thanks for the help lads.

jcnorris00's idea sounds pretty reasonable to me. I don't see any obvious holes in it.

That's because they're covered with hatches.

lol, yeah I think a combination of the quantum stockpiles and jcnorris00 set up will work. Will report back with findings.

Will you have a use for all the cages when you're done? Dump cages, atomsmash. If they're magma-safe they can be cleansed with the universal solvent.

Probably no need for the cages once I've killed every last one of their inhabitants, apart from catching more of the little buggers for my Goblin genocide program.

I use a 5 z-level deep pit.  It's usually not fatal unless the prisoners lands on their heads, this is satisfactory since I can use the prisoners for military training.  They usually do break several arms and/or legs which makes it harder for them to run, especially if they keep passing out from pain, and easier for the soldiers to kill them.

on a slight related note, none of my captured animals / golbins are being hauled to the animal stockpile, ive put it in an accessible area and made sure it has the options set, but the cages just get left stacked on top of the re-loaded cage-trap. this hasnt happened before, is it a bug?

EDIT: Fixed, oh damnation, I just checked the Orders screen and found that I had accidentally disabled "Dwarves Gather Animals" (a).
