An easier way to pit badass goblins and other monstrosities
« on: March 29, 2012, 07:33:51 am »

My current fort Sinmartyrs the Chamber of Maggots is currently housing around 200 Goblins and Trolls. Now has come the time to slaughter these abominations in the most brutal fashion (Actually I just want to pit them all into my arena for my dwarfs to decimate). However I face a rather large problem... Pitting all these guys is highly unreliable... I want to be able to pit just specific Goblins which are in my burrowed pitting room (inhabited by my pitting dwarf). Is there a way to pit specific Goblins without having to trawl through 200+ Goblin, Troll, Pets and other animals? I have tried forbidding cages, but this doesn't seem to affect whether a Goblin from that cage is pitted or not. I have been wanting to start the slaughter for months but just can't get around to it because as far as I can tell the only way to pit specific Goblins is to use "k" to find their names and then pit them by searching through the pitting list looking for said name. An arduous task indeed.

Any other way?

Thanks, i'll give that a go, i'm pretty much set up for it anyway. I'm sure i tried something not to different from this. Although I didn't use Hatches and I probably had a few parts of the stockpile that were more than a tile away from the pits. Lets see how it goes. Thanks again.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

Yes, mass pitting is an excellent caged things riddance method.
But be sure that the pit you building is at least 10 Z-levels deep, at 9 and lower i had some things from the cages actually managing to survive that fall, though very broken but can be enough to at least get more unhappy thoughts to dwarf civilians witnessing one of them crawling up the stairs.

Just wondering, I have way more Goblins and Trolls to stockpile in the newly designed pitting room than it can currently hold. I'm going to have to designate ALL enemies to be pitted. This means that things currently not held in the pitting room will also get pitted. Is there a way to just pit the creatures in the pitting room and hold off on the others until I can accommodate them? If I unstockpile all other Goblins and Trolls will they be deemed to be not in my ownership anymore, thus not being shown on the pitting menu and making my job somewhat easier? Will they get dumped somewhere else?

Perhaps you could overcome this by locking doors leading to stockpiles of creatures you don't want pitted, but you would still have to highlight them for pitting to ensure all the Goblins in the pitting room get pitted. This would lead to those locked away Goblins getting pitted from there current location when the doors were unlocked again, unless you manually undesignated them from pitting... too much trawling through the pitting menu...

I really should of been slaughtering these gits over the course of Sinmartyrs' history instead of letting them pile up, I must have towards 300. On that note, the sieges seem to have stopped recently, or at least I haven't seen one for a while, is it possible to kill/catch all the enemies in your surrounding area, leading to the end of sieges?

If you would just want to kill them, you could just make a goblin stockpile, then flood it whit magma.
Killing them efficiently.
Ofcourse, dropping them from the top to the bottom of your world could be much, much more amusing.

No no no, I must inflict pain to them personally. I want to have my dwarfs fight them all, I want a militia commander with 200+ kills, muahahaha!

I prefer a 4 level fall or so, with some fresh recruits stationed at the bottom.  Free combat experience beating up cripples!

Just be mindful that while goblin thieves can be caught in cage traps, they will frequently break loose when you try and pit them using the Mass Pitting method linked from the wiki.

If you've stripped them of their weapons, they're fairly harmless, so you can just station one squad of dwarves in the same room as your animal stockpile, and they'll kill the slippery gits as soon as they break free.

A more certain method of releasing goblin thieves is to install the cages holding the goblin thieves in your execution room, and then link the cages to a lever to set them loose.

Also remember the pitting method does not work with flying monstrosities.  Even if they are captured, and end up "falling" into a pit, they'll hover there indefinitely just below the hatch, waiting for the opportunity to fly to freedom.

Lesson learned with a flying forgotten beast. :)

A 100% sure way is to channel a pit, then build a wall in that pit, then place the cage on top, then REMOVE the wall (Making the cage hover) and the open the cage.

The cage will disassemble itself neatly aorund the hole while the caged creature falls into the pit. This is how I do all my caged prisoners.
