*Bashes with Mace* Why Won't You DIE!?
« on: March 29, 2012, 05:57:24 am »

after being told how freaking awesome Maces are... I make a new adventurer starting with one and find myself nearly unable to kill ANYTHING.
Oh sure, I disable it quickly, Cripple it in one or two blows... But, Well.. just LOOK At this!

I'll Bash the thing till I'm Exhausted and it still won't die!
What gives?

Your arms are obviously weak as a goblin babies!
Bite it in the throat instead and yank the head off.

When did anyone ever say maces are good?

I suspect you misread 'flail' as 'mace'.

Also, jabberers are among the biggest animals in existance. At one point, I determined that the only larger animals were either semi/megabeasts, intelligent, and/or heavy grazers.

Warhammers do seem to be better.  Although my understanding was that the appeal of blunt weapons is more armour piercing than handling huge enemies like Jabberers.

Of course, there's something to be said for pulping... At some point, if you are successfully fracturing a skull with each blow, shouldn't that skull be nothing more than a gritty white paste?  Why is it still protecting them brain meats?

I kinda wish Toady had put in the extra 2 weeks to a month it would have taken him to figure out pulping for undead, and I guess by extension, everything else. It would have made the undead a little less silly to deal with, and it probably would clarify several gaps in combat that are due to not having a true sense of the scale of your opponent. When something is said to be gigantic, you don't know if that's a relative or absolute statement.

Actually, yeah... "It is x times bigger than you" or "It is x (whatever unit of length DF uses) tall" would really help get a scale check on things (it would also expose the weirdness of some things taking up only one square, but nevermind that).

The fact that fracturing the skull does nothing is also really confusing, but I guess it's part of a wider trend of useless injuries.  I dunno if it would be possible to make it so that shattering it means that it can no longer stop blows to the head from hitting the brain or something.

Your best bet is to keep hitting it until you're a legendary maceman. Then probably hit it in the body until you smash the ribs through the heart or lungs or something.

Wouldn't its body be even bigger and more resistant to that kind of thing happening?  Trying to cut it and let it bleed out seems more likely.

Incidentally if it "gave in to pain" you won't get any XP for hitting it.

I guess I'd have to look at the stats to get an idea of what a war hammer is in DF, but I always imagined the real world historical sense of a war hammer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_hammer
