View surface

I seem to recall there was a way to view only the surface in an older version while in fortress mode. I checked the wiki and I do not seem to see that feature listed, am i remembering things wrong, or is there a hotkey that does this (or ever did this)?

"Only the surface" - as opposed to what? If there is a hill on the map, you will see everything on a single z-level (cutting into the hill) rather than a top-down view of the surface.

yeah, that's the standard view. i seem to recall that there was a way to make the main view show only the top layer, whatever z level that may have been. top down, surface only, not a z level cross section of any one layer. kinda like a view from the sky, instead of a cross section view. if i remember correctly (which is in doubt) you could use that view to easily find dorfs outside to, for example, see if there was a chance they would beet a siege to the front gate.

Not that I've ever known, unless you're referring to Stonesense.

F1, by default, takes you to the embark location, if that's what you're referring to.  You can assign custom locations to F2, F3, etc, if you wish, too.

Yeah, stonesense is the only way I know to do this sort of thing.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

There used to be a sort of 3d view somewhere (I think it was under the tab menu? not quite sure anymore). It was horribly broken though and didn't really work at all, so Toady removed it either in 31. or 34.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!
