A pile of levers has both practical and RP value.  I always make my lever room directly adjacent to the meeting hall, but since your dining room should probably already be adjacent to the meeting hall, it's a convenient place to put levers if you want them pulled soon.  Extra bonus points if it's in a position that allows you to put in a set of windows overlooking the front courtyard, so all the dwarves can cheer and pound the tables when Fikod goes to pull the big red lever marked Exterminate.

You just gave me an awesome idea!  Next fort I make will have windows overlooking my courtyard with clear glass windows along that wall so those eating can watch the slaughter.

And once a month, I'll take 8 - 10 cage-trapped and stripped intruders, build their cages on the near side, and hook them up to one of your levers.  Dwarves can then place bets on which ones make it to the gate, what order they get their in, and which marksdwarf camping on the walls or weapon trap concealed in the way will get the most kills and so forth.

It's like a horse track with headshots and splattered gore!  Thank you for your inspiration good sir!

I can't wait for you to actually do it. It'll be hillarious.

Jam a door with its corpse and let all the goblins in. Hey, nobody said it had to be a weapon against your enemies.

Gild it. Build masterwork 10x weapon traps. Don't be a derp and build your dining hall in clay/soil.  :P

Actually for game mechanics I don't think glass windows actually allow sight through them as far as detection and job cancellation is concerned (something made out of glass does, but I don't remember what). Plus I was thinking that the room would be a z-level or two up from the killing floor to give the best view.

And I never build my dining or other value-critical rooms in soil.  That's for elves.  I prefer large magnetite/tetrahedrite or similar deposits for dining rooms (the huge round deposits I mean, don't remember what the term in the wiki is) and smaller but more valuable veins for my nobles if I can find a suitably large one and have plenty to spare (my last fort had so many gold veins in it I wanted to mod gold into a weaponizable metal simply because I couldn't get rid of the stuff... wound up using it for constructed floors or sitting next to my forges to encourage moody metalworkers to go for it first, nabbing me several pieces of high-end artifact furniture and a platinum Blinghammer)

In terms of detection, they most definitely do. Else why would Girlinhat have designed and used watchtowers with glass windows?

Also, "cluster", I believe.

You could have made golden roads!

story time!
In the immensely rich citadels of the dwarven race, where the streets are said to be paved with gold, there once lived a young dwarf (blah blah blah).

Windows are transparent.  Walls and floors made from glass blocks are not transparent, however.  A pity, really.

Put an artifact furniture in it, add gold statues to it, or a weapon trap.

And these are the reason I speak with my fellow dorfmasters/mistresses/general overseers.  I knew something based off of glass-based constructs conferred visibility but I didn't know if it was glass window walls or walls constructed from raw glass modules or whatever was available.  Like I said, this entire concept is untested and once I or someone else implements and tests it we'll get final results.  Even if whatever glass I used as a barrier carried visibility and therefore labor/munchie/boozing interruptions would it carry across z-levels?

Refloor it with gold bars?

Didn't someone post somewhere that floors didn't affect value? It's sad if its true.
