I stumbled onto a cave. I started seeing messages about Kobolds attack and killing each other. So I went in to help. I killed a lot of them, but some won't auto attack. I have to manually attack them with Shift-A, but can't talk to them, does this mean they are friendly?

Anyway, I leave the cave site to go rest and come back and I see more kobolds attacking each other and now they are getting set on fire and bad stuff. "Kobold is struck by ball of flames" and I see mention of a Sauropod Devil. I havent found the Demon yet. What does this mean? will it kill me? Should I run while I can?

If it can shoot !!fireballs!!, then it is probably capable of easily killing you. Fire is an immensely destructive force and you can expect to have some fun if you cannot run away faster than the nearest kobold.

It might be a really long way down in a cavern though.  Try pressing l and looking down a bunch of Z levels.

I explored the area and found an ash spirit or something and killed it pretty easily, but I can't find that sauropod.

The spirit may be in the shape of a sauropod.

Sometimes in worldgen unique demons will settle in caves and act like semi-megabeasts rather than take over a human/goblin civ. If that happened to be the same cave as the k-bolds picked to live in then much slaughter would happen once an adventurer showed up and they realized that they hate each other.

You can never talk to creatures, such as kobolds, that have the [UTTERANCES] token.

My best guess for the kobolds killing each other is that sometimes there is a historical figure kobold that is part of the civ but not part of the local group (scouts and beast hunters, usually). The k's [LOCAL_BANDITY] token makes them auto hostile to almost everyone not part of the local group, so they try and kill the historical guy. But, since the guy they attack is part of the same civ, killing him makes the killer and enemy of the civ and then the rest of them then attack the killer. This can lead to an ever growing murder spiral. I've seen this happen with goblins modded to live in cities, and it is +hilarious+.


A much better explaination is that the kobolds managed to release a demon that was sealed away in the caverns, half of them decided to worship it, and there was a kobold civil war between the new Cult of the Sauropod and the kobolds who wanted to keep to the traditional kobold religion of worshiping stolen xpigtail fiber socksx.

Checking an old adventurer's legend file I found he became the hero of kobold civs a couple of times by killing their enemies (such as say a hydra which had killed 2 dozen kobolds).  I lost this status after fighting off kobold ambushes though, so I'm not sure if being a "hero" of a civ actually makes them friendly.
