Finding the vampire in a town...
« on: March 28, 2012, 01:55:37 pm »

So, my first quest tasked me to find and kill a vampire in a town, but I heard  it can change its name. I don't really want to ask all the townfolk if they really are night creatures... Can they really change their names? And do you have any tips for fighting them? (I guess internal damage won't be of any use, thankfully I am an axedwarf)

They are obvious because they tend to flash blue (they are legendaries thanks to living so long) and will have around a thousand items made out of human or dwarf hair or nails.  Vampires are not tough to find at all when you actually run into them.

In town?  I recommend running away and opening every door so that the people inside can see the vampire, and the whole village will swarm them after they are revealed as a hostile vampire.  Let them take the hits for you. The only problem with that is that they might steal your kill.

Thanks alot!
Also, can it be outside the area designated by the box in the top-left? You know, the one with the cardinal directions...

Just ask any townsfolk about "service". They will either tell you about the evil vampire and point to the direction (look in a clothing shop named "Someshop of Shopping" east from here). OR they will greet you with strange remarks and give you a completely different quest. That's your vampire. With the directions given it is quite easy to find the vampire. (Mine always had their true name so far).
Up to now all the vampires have been INSIDE their area

unfortunately, the "service" question in town doesn't work if you ask a lord/lady for quests and get a town-residing vampire, they just tell you to go back to the lord/lady and get a quest...
I had this problem in a capital city, I could not find that vampire for crap and had to methodically search basically every house one-at-a-time.

The compass does not lead to the vampire, it leads to the center of the town the vampire is in.  It's up to you to actually find where, in the entire city the vampire actually is, and you get no help in that.

I honestly recommend you just keep mashing that "service" conversation thing until you have a dozen or so quests, and then just pick the ones that you feel like doing, and are easy to find the targets.

If you happen to find the vampire while you are just roaming around, great. If not, it doesn't really matter, there are a hundred more quests for you to do.

The compass does not lead to the vampire, but the description of "Service" of the Vampire ("search first in a house to the northwest") does (at least 5 or so times in my experience). In fact, inside the vampire's house, the Service does not give a "search first" clue.

On the quest screen I've had my marker take me to within one city-map tile of my target. It was one of those "a bandit from below has started to terrorize the people of the city!' quests.

They don't steal the blood - the problem is that typically, you land a bunch of blows on the vampire, but never a killing blow (because they halve damage), so they just sort of bleed out from numerous wounds, and if a random peasant happened to get the last ineffectual punch in right before the vampire bled his last drop of blood, he gets the kill.

There will be PLENTY of blood lying around for you to drink, though.  Nobody ever cleans up the body, either, and you can perpetually generate more blood by picking up and throwing the body, which leaves a big ol' blood trail everywhere, even if you leave town, and the blood pools disappear.

The first time you ask, sure. Just ask them for service again. The second time they'll usually point you to the Vampire you seek.

searching at night is more effective still. Nearly everyone will be sleeping except for insomniacs and vampires.
