My new .06 fort is a ramp descending into the ground with a stone keep with 6 round towers inside a wooden palisade wall. The maps completely flat and the ramp leads off on various levels to the different areas. Descending you have
Farms Ramp
Food Storage Ramp
Dining Area and other communal areas Ramp
Bedrooms Ramp Bedrooms
Crypts Ramp
Offices and adminstrative areas Ramp
Ramp Industrial District with various warehouses and production halls.

Interesting concept on basing off a ramp network. I do the ramp network extending down to the bottom cavern layer. But I base the entrance to my fort off of the ramp leading down. With a multi doorered gatehouse protecting the entrance to the rest of the fort.
Nice. I have a seperate dig site for caverns for extra security. So everything has to go through the front security network and I only need that one network. If you've ever read Gemclods that what turned me onto this. I actually started looking for sites with flat areas to make this style easier whereas I used to play mostly hilly areas and work off of that. I really like the idea of your fort though. It seems really dwarfey to have the whole thing underground. Maybe carve a giant stone gateway into a mountain side. I think I have the idea for my next fort now: Spearhills 2 Electric Boogaloo!

This one was one of the first ones I made for 34.xx. The layout varies for each fort, but the general thought I go for, is that I'm trying to build a town I can imagine dwarves living in. The fort in that link is the massive, ornate cavern craftsparadise with great halls and tons of rock pillars. Another example would be the spiraling pit fort I lost a short while ago, where my dwarves occupied and crafted homes in the walls of an ever decending dig pit - a (mostly) square, 15x15 hole from the surface, heading down as far as it'd be able to. Yet another example would be the forts where I dig down to a cave and attempt to make house out of the rock formations as they spring out naturally.

My current fort's attempting to mimick a somewhat generic fantasy village, with taverns and blacksmith's shops and a castle and whatnot, but carved out from rock instead of built above ground. Will see how that works over the next couple days.

Figuring out how to layout my fort's usually what gives me most challenge, and also what makes me abandon most.

Efficiency is of course not very high on my priorities. I've got enough drudges to haul stuff around.

Here is my normal template that I use when making fortress's - I have only been playing for 2 weeks so far, and pretty much anything to the bottom part (Where my entrance and barracks are) is in constant development. I'll end up making it bigger, more extensive, have lava/water traps and such but am yet to get my head around some of that. This is a new build also so I haven't got around to fleshing out my normal template. BTW the mines entrance is in the middle of the industrial sector, and below the industrial sector is my water room that my wells get their source from and below that is my catacombs where the burials take place. I used to have this same design but tiered going down Z-Levels but too many times it got flooded so I decided to do it all on one level and have flood gates everywhere xD

There is a overlay explaining what I use for what to the left also. Any advice would be awesome.

To spool:

Wow, that's pretty.  And neat.  And pretty neat.  I only want to suggest a few things, which you may already have planned.

1) First and foremost, your last defense gate next to the trade depot has a flaw.  I consider this the most important fix to make, as the only thing more dangerous than no security is a false sense of security.  The bridge raises toward the depot, so a building destroyer need only smash the depot to be able to reach and destroy the bridge.  Dismantle the bridge, maybe smooth the floor beneath it if you're as aesthetically demanding as I am, dig a 2x3 trench across the hallway, and build the bridge so that when raised a building destroyer can't stand next to it on the same Z level.

2) Do you plan on chaining animals at choke points near your entrance?  They're pretty good at spotting kobolds and ambushes.

3) Do you have magma or regular forges and smelters?  Because if you're trying for a larger population, which requires a larger military, you will find that using trees as fuel will limit you greatly.  Consider either making a metal industry above the magma sea (or a lava tube if you're lucky), or pumping magma up under your metal workshops block.

But I'm curious, did you give your dwarves any temporary quarters while digging out this massive place, or did they simply sleep on rough ground until the job was done?

Yea i think i will end up doing that dig under my gate by the trade depot. Its a good idea. Currently I have found the magma tubes but still don't really know how to pump it around. so I will probably just end up making a magma forge down there for now. Also when making the base I mapped out the entire thing before I even let my dwarfs move an inch. But I only allowed them to cut out bits of it at a time. I started out with a 3 wide tunnel from my stairs down to the trade depot, and made the rooms and meeting hall in there on either side. Then let the dwarfs carve out the dining room and move in to the industrial sector to open up some of the bays that I use. From there as they finished each section I just made them go to the #1 noble quarters then and onto #1 peasant quarters. Then just moved on from there. Surprisingly it didn't take too long to cut out really. and my 3rd migrant wave was something like 64? But I'm back down to around 60 dwarfs in total after Iv lost my army a few times due to a 30xGoblin push. Right now what im doing it below the entrance to my keep making a secondary tunnel that I only open up when there are hostiles and i draw them into a passage that I can block off with two bridges and at the same time opening a flood tunnel to flood the passage, when they die I open up the release valve and the water drains into a massive empty room. In relation to the chaining up of animals, Iv finished the bridge across the stream and put a few traps on it and will chain some pets up at the end of the bridge.

My first level is usually for traps (ie. tunneling magma to make !!gobbos!!) however i having got around to it yet and it always turns out empty :(. Second is my Workshops. The way i make it is a 3x3 area for the workshop, and under it a 3xhowevermuchineed for the storage for the object the workshop uses or makes. Next is food and refuse (indoor refuse pile 8) ) which includes a food stockpile, an isolated refuse stockpile, 2 farm plots ,stills, kitchens, butcher shops, and fisherys. Next is diningroom/bedrooms/hospital/graveyard. Baisicaly a 3xwhatever tunnel with the various things branching off each side and bedrooms at the end (i try to get it symetrical, and as ugly as it sounds, It actuly looks suprisingly pretty once its all finished) . Next is metal industry which is 4 chambers for charcoal/coal,flux,ore,bars around a center one with smelters. The one that holds bars is then attached to 2 metalsmiths which are then attached to a huge chamber which is ammo/weapon/armour storage. All the next levels are different depending on the fort

I would show pics but my comp was brutally murdered (my dad got pissed and shattered the screen when he slammed it :( )

Picture is sort of old, but whatever.

I generally make a staircase leading down to the fortress without much embellishment on top.  Often there will be a bridge trap for making enemies ded along the way.

I try to crowd everything I need into a big symmetrical mass on one z-level.  Note the community aquariums and Boozebucks(C) dining hall.

That reminds me... is anyone else as OCD about bedroom design as me?
Each bedroom had to have:
Two (2) iron statues,
Two (2) beds of wood,
One (1) bronze chair,
One (1) green glass cabinet,
One (1) green glass table,
and two (2) green class boxes.

IF IT DID NOT MEET THESE SPECIFICATIONS THEN IT WAS NOT USED.

I was also planning on knocking holes in the floor of each bedroom and having water run through some sewers underneath.  I'd already dug a sewer system and some floodgates to fill it with water.

I wanted to pretend that my dwarves would go into their little rooms and poop. Little pooping dwarves.

I don't mean to alarm you, but it appears that your Dwarves are all in fact elephants.

I've been making most of my forts on 1 z level now, aside from most stockpiles/farms.

Pretty much what every 2D fort was, would get unbelievably slow very quickly though . 3d is a life saver in terms of efficiency.

I give every dwarf a 5x5 smoothed-stone room with a single bed, and metal chair, metal table, metal cabinet, metal door.   Never listened to any complaints so far. :)
If I get everything else set up, I'll start giving them statues, too.  Who doesn't like a good statue, really?

I'm also a little nutty when it comes to comfort. My most recent fort had a 5x5 room for every dwarf/couple, all in a marble layer with a bed I think tower cap, can't remember, looks nice in Ironhand anyway, and then gold cabinets and coffers and a statue, get this, made out of the dwarf's favourite material... OF THEM. Took me an excessive time, but was great fun. Lost this due to unfortunate accident with a GCS anyway.

My next for is going to be one I've tried about 5 times and always failed on for some reason or another, a massive walled city. But this time I've got it all planned out, I just need a totally flat area which is warm forest with a river in the middle, preferable with clay and sand, flux, sedimentary layers, and here's the biggy, a volcano in the corner. Then I wall the entire thing off with marble walls (thick with towers, parapets, etc.) and build every dward a house on the surface. Bedrooms, dining room/kitchen linked to a sewer by a well, it was all pretty spectacular! :D

I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...
Link for full quote. 'tis mighty funny.

My current fort is on a mountain, so the design will probably end up looking like this:
Whatever I needed at the time, shoved into a mined out vein of whatever I wanted at the time.
