A mature question about Dwarven pregnancy.
« on: March 27, 2012, 11:13:53 pm »

How does it work in the Dwarf Fortress world?

As of late babies have cost me nothing but trouble being as they are Emotion-ruining Meat-shields.

Im just curious if the spouse's meet up for a few seconds and she is pregnant or female dwarfs just walking around get randomly impregnated just because they are married?

If they do meet up for a few seconds would a burrow stop the said act?

Science has been conducted involving dwarf reproduction.

The concensus is that they use spores.  Complete and draconian segregation of dwarves will still result in pregnancies.

Miscarriages can be induced by traumatic injuries, such as dangerroom beating machines, falls, and monster encounters. Miscarriages however, incur bad thoughts in both parrents.

To prevent babies, set the baby values in initd.ini to 0 in all places, and wait 1 year.  No more babies.

I believe all non-egg layers still reproduce by "spores", meaning females are impregnated automatically as long as a male (in this case their husband) is anywhere on the map.

Alternatively ritualistically drop all male dwarves into a spiked pit the moment they immigrate to the fortress.

Then throw everyone into the military and start an Amazon utopia.

That actually sounds fun, rofl. Although the mass-genocide would cause some distress on the remaining women. =D

Sorry. No option to remove the right breast.

Conversely, creating an all male population has the same desirable effect, and does not suffer the ill effects of breasticles. See, eg, sparta. (Female spartans were never warriors in the army, but were terrifying in their own right. It is reported in literature that male spartans spent the vast majority of their time with their units, and only returned home to create the state mandated offspring.)

You shouldn't worry about children. Just strategically flood certain areas to force them into little a room all with eachother. In that room you can drop in clothes and food as needed. Might want to have a craftsdwarf's workshop there as well.

You call it "distress", I call it "weeding out the weak".

Conversely, creating an all male population has the same desirable effect

I think that you're forgetting something very important.

It's cool, female dwarves don't actually have breasts (check the raws).  In fact such titles as "male" or "female" are just for politeness sake when dealing with other races.  Dwarves have no gender, there are simply those who choose to drop babies out of their non-disclosed orifice and those who choose not to.  The taking on of gender roles is just to make diplomacy easier so that the human liaison doesn't feel awkward calling your mayor "it" all the time.

No need to remove it.  The dwarves use crossbows, and so do not have to worry about bowlash of the breast.

As only married dwarves breed, simply preventing marriage has the same sterilizing effect as total gendercide. So creative use of burrows or physical boundaries, enforcing strict NO GIRLZ ALOWED rules, will make a 100% sure contraceptive. You'll still have to deal with those migrants who arrive already wedded (unless you savescum them away), but those are relatively few--and you can always put one or both parents into a high-risk profession.

You good sir are a horrible and evil being for linking TVTropes, and your dark powers cannot possibly be used for good purposes.

Can I imprison you underneath my entryway to either drive goblin invaders to infinite procrastination or untimely insanity aimed at their fellow greenskins?

(Yes, I will weaponize ANYTHING I find if it is deadly or disastrous enough)

3x replies:

Kodkod: does not apply to clearly gay men. Spartans were clearly gay men. Clearly gay men would not be interested in the damsel in distress, and are already a radical departure from established social mores. Clearly gay men feature prominently in greek stories.

Girlinhat: I concede to your well thought out argument, and accept its veracity.

Krenshala: removal of breasts have other useful effects besides reduction of bowlash. It also increases the range of motion of the right arm for sword slashing, and scourging.

Kodkod: bonus! Google "eromanos".  The wikipedia article has some interesting artwork.
