I gave up trying to landing in complete manual mode , i just use setspeed 0 and go down rather slowly, just lightly tapping R or F (whatever is the top reactor) when the ground is getting very close , as the setspeed 0 will slow your ship down automatically (as it will always try to set the vertical speed to 0).

Those cabins are very expensive, so i guess those multi-people transport missions are more targetted to later game when the player is supposedly having more money (and a bigger ship i guess too).

I figured out landing on mercury :) Thanks for the help on that :)

Though I'm curious how one makes money getting radioactives, and then dumping them on mercury. I landed on mercury and I couldn't jettison them out if I was just landed, is there another area/button to do it? Cause when I took off from landing and jetsion'ed the radioactives I didn't make any money from it. Cause that was what interested me the most from the one guy doing garbage runs with radioactives. That sounds exactly like something I'd want to make a living off in the game, even if its only small amounts of profit.

I looked at missions and didn't see anything that allowed me to do that, so I'm not sure how that works.

You make money as soon as you load up the radioactives: They have negative purchase price, so you get paid to take them away.  You have to jettison them so that you can clear out your cargo bay to get paid to carry off more radioactives.

Oh okay, I didn't actually notice my money going up or the price I just assumed I was paying for them. That makes more sense! Thanks :) To be fair, my eyesight sucks so its hard to see numbers and letters on the screen till I get new glasses lol. I'll just use that for my dumbness :P

Guys, we're overthinking our Radioactives disposal business.  I barely broke orbit, dumped my Radioactives, then landed.  Cops didn't care.
...I suspect the illegality of our dumping business hasn't been programmed yet, although I haven't dumped Radioactives within view of a patrol vessel yet.

EDIT: I spoke too soon, apparently the key words are "broke orbit", as I finally got the "Dumping isn't tolerated here" message when I dumped without breaking orbit.  And the cops shot at me, dunno if I will be able to escape, but I can't afford the fines, so time to see.

EDIT2: I tried to do a mission in Sol, but the cops finally caught up with me.  I jumped to Toliman (which I had already keyed up), then to Sirus of the Commonwealth of Independent Worlds.  I'll probably try and purchase some metal for the hull repairs and be more careful with my dumping in the territory of my new friends.

I think i found a safe , fast and easy radioactive dumping life

- Start on Mars

- Press the Show Comms button on top screen, sell the 2 hydrogen units (you're not going to hyperspace anyways, so let's free cargo)

- in the icon that looks like some radio, just sell Hyperdrive 3 and Laser MW1, not going to need them for the radioactive dumper life.

- buy 32tons of radioactives (well get paid for 32tons of radioactive)

- Click on System Overview button on top of screen and target Europa (one of Jupiter's moons)

- Request launch, right click on the Europa target in the reticle

- Select autopilot to fly to vicinity of Europa (one of Jupiter's moon)

- Once there, click on Personnal Info button then on the cargo icon and click on the Jetison button in front of the radioactives, ditch all the 32 tons

- now target and fly to Clark's Station vicinity (it's a station in orbit of Europa in the system overviews)

- dock and fill the 32tons of free space of your ship with radioactive (oh an refuel too).

- target Europa, take off and go to Europa orbit (don't use the autopilot even for vinicity, the autopilot seems to feel the need to go very far from europa first, wasting tons of fuel for nothing and Europa is close enough to fly manually to orbit quickly), it takes very few time as Europa is super close, once in orbit just jetison all the radioactives.

- go back to Clark's Station to refill in radioactives and repeat the dumping on Europa.

each dumping travel and back to station should award you 101$ and consume less than 1% of fuel (so no need to refuel) and is rather fast to do as you're not flying much.
But obviously as boring as one could imagine the radioactive dumper life, and buying a better ship with much bigger cargo (to get actually much nicer profit from the dumping) is so expensive you're going to be stuck at doing it so repeatingly you're probably going to get bored by the game before.
So in the end it's not very recommended to choose this path, better keep the hyperspace drive 3 and do delivery from system to system as it can pay relatively well.

I played a garbage simulator some time back for 84 hours I believe it tracked and I personally never got bored :P The only reason I stopped playing is cause I ran out of garbage trucks I could buy and the game eventually had a "you win" screen or something similar I couldn't bypass sadly.

Its rare you can be a garbage person in a game lol. Even if it took months to earn a good ship, then it be like being a garbage person in real life and saving up for years to buy a house or something. Best job in any game and real life :D Cause someone has to do it :(

It may not be an exciting job, and it may be dirty and smelly. Or in this case, I suppose even dangerous handling radioactive material. But its good honest work!

Not that honest as it's illegal to dump those radioactive waste (it's just you're not detected on planets that do not have a city/starport) :D
Note that you can also dump non radioactive garbage too ,called "rubbish" if you wish, but they pay of a "rubbish" garbage ton 0.08$ (while they pay you a bit more than 3$ for a radioactive ton), it's as illegal to dump as radioactive too.

Fair enough, its going to another planet and just trashing it with junk.

Still, its the best job a game can have :P

I found the secret to making money was to swap the Hyperdrive 3 for the Hyperdrive 2 (for added capacity), sell the Atmospheric Shielding, and then do Courier/Cargo runs.  You can make more money by loading up on Radioactives before you launch, then dumping them once you leave orbit (the moment when the planet is about the size of a baseball, to play it safe).  For space stations, if you can still see it, then you're too close, as they are much smaller.

I'm not sure if the time in system to dump is actually more efficient time-wise than not bothering with the radioactives and just leaving as soon as you can legally jump to hyperspace, as it is much closer to the planet.

Oh, and keep the starting laser.  Some of those courier/cargo missions draw hostile craft after you've done them for a while.  In my one hostile encounter, I blasted my laser in the direction of the enemy ship after setting a course towards the destination.  Dunno if my laser fire got him to back off, but just in case it matters, keep the laser.

In Frontier Elite 2 ,  Sol and Barnard's Star were safe from danger so you could sell your laser and missiles, it was one of the reason the trading route was so popular when you started to play as it was safe and there was possibility to make money from the route.
I don't know if Pioneer implemented "safe" systems too, but they didn't implemented the same trading system as in FE2 as Sol - Barnard's Star is nowhere as worthwile as in FE2.

edit : in case you're landed on a station/city and no available mission is up to your taste, just go to your cockpit view and wait at full acceleration time, as every 24 hours missions/equipment/ships available are changed.

I think they have high security ratings so it is "fairly safe" but nah its not elite 2, its inspired by it but it has developed into its own beast over 10 years.  I do love the random factional system though - theres room for x3/x4 player impact mechanisms there at some point

What is that random factional system ?
I remember reading somewhere that Pioneer had 3 factions, are there random ones too ?

Last I remember, you start seeing them as you go further out into the galaxy. It's a big galaxy by the way.
