That's it, game over man. I just. want. to. tame. giant. animals. I got one adorable giant hamster. This was never supposed to be a giant fortress and certainly not a mountainhome. Fracking king just showed up. I never should have made those adamantine axes. I never should have donated that huge stack of masterwork roasts to the kingdom. I'm genning a new smaller world with more savagery, more history, more mega and semi and I'm editing my init to keep out pesky migrants. I'm setting up my cage traps better next time, too. I think I will use pressure plates to try to automate excluding some of the lighter weight riff-raff. And egg layers, I need to keep animal trainers off the eggs.

Animal training is a long term thing. I can't play ten years in any reasonable amount of time with a mountainhome full of hundreds of layabouts, and I've missed everything interesting training-wise just trying to run and protect an expanding fortress. Oh well, it's also given me familiarity with the ramifications of the new clothing system. Keeping dwarves happy just got easier, especially if you train up some skilled clothiers. Practically my whole fort is ecstatic, I have two dwarves with happiness over 1,000.

Edit: and the queen is a vampire.  Definitely time for a new world.

If you don't want to deal with the blood-drinking nobility, just put them behind some gem windows and have an air-lock setup to allow "X in room" demands.

A single spore lands, finds nourishment in decay and attains maturity..
In turn it exhales a cloud of life, a thousand spores land... so progresses Juffo-Wup.

...and over the last few days I've been in a Mycon slaughter-frenzy thinking no one else had ever heard of SCII.  Props.

Also, insert Shofixti Scouts or Spathi Eluders here for maximum salvage potential (but thats for another forum)

and also yes, those other aliens are INDEED more than living, breathing pin-ups!

But this world is going to be so much better. Actually, I think I may have overdone it a little with some of the world gen parameters...

All of the Star Control series was great (except for that one, that we do not speak of).  I still have fond memories of losing a game due to running out of time.

But other people have definitely heard of it...there's proof here with Footkerchief's profile.

Hell I shoulda remembered him from before my hiatus for yet another game, how can you miss a Mycon?

Also I might try to mod in a few of the SCII races now that I'm splitting my time between the two.  Tell me that the short&furry one from this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5aRPQc2KqQ&feature=relmfu doesn't remind you of a Shofixti

I think we've discussed Star Control before...heh, but that's a racoon, and shofixti are deranged marsupials who consider death via combat an honorable and worthy way to go.

Heh, I also think we've hijacked someone's thread each time we have too. :)

Sorry, I might be colored somewhat by my grandfather's perception of Japanese culture and the roles of honor and tactical suicide as he served with the USMC in the South Pacific during WWII.  Yes it may make me sound horrible but from his war stories I do not hate them but rather respect them because from the way he told it I would rather stand toe-to-toe with a dust-spewing FB made of raw adamantine than be on the wrong end of an Imperial squad bent on bloodshed.  Honor often requires sacrifice, and in many cases it is the ultimate form thereof.  Long story short, while the link I added may be a parody (and other videos related) the makers of SCII based the Shofixti behavior heavily on feudal Japan and the behaviors present within, some of which pervaded into WWII

But in either case (regardless of a raccoon being a marsupial or not) there are parallels that made me laugh hysterically, including the insanely close attachment to honor and even a desire to die an explosive and honorable death even though its found in a small furry creature.  Something generally deemed harmless harboring a wanton desire for destruction that does not care for its own well-being.

Aye, I'm aware of what the shofixti were based off of.  Wouldn't care to go against anyone in a fight who doesn't considering dying a problem.

My favourite part of the shofixti arc is still the species repopulation portion.  It's just hilarious.

I thought the racoon in the short you linked was more of a random bit, than with any connection to the Shofixti.

Yes. I was in a hurry and I couldn't find the vid in the series I was thinking of to describe the correlation.  Wish I could though, I remember there's a perfect comparison in one of those but it's been so long I can't remember which one it is.

Also there were a great many parts of that game that still crack me up,  Scottish Pterosaurs, Japanese Marsupials, and Nymphomaniac Amazons, oh my!

Still despite occasional race- or culture-base stereotypes that game is awesome for a thinker like your average DF player.  Not only must you play political dodgeball, but you must do so while balancing your fuel and resource use with your intake in resources to compensate.  Personally after gaining all relevant knowledge and tech from the Traders (avoiding spoilers here) I accumulate Data for them to absorb my fuel costs, and leave other resources for other needs (after the shofixti are saved, that becomes even simpler).

Don't forget that the clock is always ticking, and once you run out of time, it's over.  :)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

No such thing as overdoing it.

My world I'm playing with now has had 3 ages of myth, and is in the 3rd age of legends. Should be an interesting read in legends mode.

Of course the resource battle got much easier if you were capable of killing fleets of 20+ dreadnaughts/marauders with a single thraddish torch.

Why couldn't my vampire Hammerer eat someone useless, like a migrant? Instead, she went after my only gemcutter.. but sadly there were no witnesses, so I convicted someone's pet duck as the murderer.  It got off easy, with no beatings or jail time.  >.<

In my case, after I got the Hellbore Cannon and devoted a couple slots to it and energy generation I just sauntered into ur-quan space and farmed dreadnaughts.  Targeting modules help too
