Boredom: How to cope?
« on: March 27, 2012, 07:31:11 pm »

Several of my best forts ever were lost to /boredomquit. This is after I build my apartment tower and a town around it. So, what to do? (Besides FD, I know about and use that.)

Axelords.

More of them, or less of them, depending on how your fort is going.

Have you considered flooding the world with precious earthblood?

7 Woodcutters, 7 axes, 0 picks, and a deep forest.  Show those Elves how a REAL forest retreat is built!  Bonus points if you embark right next to an Elven settlement.

Build perpetually more elaborate living quarters for your favorite dwarves.  If you don't have favorite dwarves, start promoting dwarves.  Tell them their name is "Billy" now, and they are now your best friend OR ELSE, BILLY!

Go for minor-megaproject size dining halls with working waterfalls and making every single room in your fort "legendary".  Even the workshops.  Billy better be happy not just for taking pride in his work, but his workplace as well, RIGHT, BILLY?! Produce over a billion Dwarfbucks in fortress wealth.  Make your fortress literally spiked with some random material.

Channel out a giant moat and fill it with magma, and then stock it with magma men and fire imps, and make the only bridge across the moat a cast obsidian bridge shaped like a tongue leading to a giant cast obsidian skull entrance, and engrave EVERYTHING.

You can never get too elaborate.

Could always ochestrate accidents to incite tantrum spirals to thin out people and create problems to solve( Cause let's face it, you'll forget to patch the hole you collapsed on Urist McSuicideMiner and let in bad guys)

Or incite war with the elves while living in an all wood aboveground settelment, and kill them with thier own weapons after luring the elvish fools to thier deaths.

Or for a more challenging fight, Piss the humans off.

Turn your outpost into the pinnacle of dwarven medicine.  Your doctor will need a lot of patients to research, but luckily you've got a few hundred potential broken bones and lacerations that are only a lever pull away.

At last, someone else who shares this view.

Again, violence incitment is always an option. Thos elves can score lucky hits making potential engagments with the woodclad hippies potentially deadly. Plus you can imagine the scene as it plays out in your head. Which is always fun.

That's actually my eventual goal with the fortress of Anvilring.  I figure I'll screw up hilariously at least a few times, though.

Build a dwarven water park. Pools, fountains, waterslides, restaurant enclosed within an aquarium, the works.

Bonus: Embark where merfolk can freely access the aquarium.
