I thought digging a room was enough for a dwarf.

They spent a year sitting around, while I was going "why arent they working"

possibly the worst possible way.
Not starvation, but dehydration. In my first fort, I did not know how to get a proper booze-generating system going. Those poor bastards either died incapable of remembering what a stiff drink even looked like, or so angry at each-other they stopped caring about anything other than murder.

Starvation & thirst were definitely the reason for the first few "learning" fortresses, for me.

After that, dust/breath from FB's were at the top of the list.

Then came the days of the Great Goblin Melter, and all that was history.

I had a child fail a strange mood in the first autumn.  I had no idea what she was doing except saying "bones... yes...", so I left her alone.  She went berserk and killed two of my starting seven, by which time they were friends with all the other founders. Tantrum spiral ensued thereafter. And I didn't even see the caravan...  :(

How about I list my first five:

-Starvation
-Dehydration
-Starvation
-Aquifer
-Aquifer AND Starvation

It took me a while to get the basic mechanics down, needless to say.

tried to release a goblin lasher in the barracks for execution. Wired him to a lever. Pulled the lever.  It did not go well. Probably should have at least taken his scourge. He ended up holding ground in the central hallway of my terribly cluttered fort, the entire military lying around him with minor broken bones. Since this was a few updates before targeted attacks the bastard just kept injuring everyone and wouldn't end it. I abandoned when I realized no one could stop him.

My first fortress was built simultaneously while watching some Newbie Tutorials on youtube, except the tutorial didn't mention that fishing with forgotten beasts carp in the water was going to lead to  ruin fun.  Needless to say by the time I realized all my dwarfs were heading to the river to help there pal, I had no idea how to stop them, it was over.

Starvation.

I just realized two things. 1. For the Win and F___ the World have the same initials. 2. They have the same meaning in Dwarf Fortress.

Starvation. Yup.

Actually my very very very first fort was waaaaay back in the 2d days. I think I played for about 10 minutes before giving up. I remember causing a cave in and failing miserably at starting a farm. It didn't die so much as be forgotten.

Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

The earliest forts I remember had badgers and skeletal hippos. Mostly badgers. Those things were mean.
I remember the skeletal hippo waltzing into the entrance of the fort just as the mason was about to build the wall to seal it up. They didn't stand a chance.

I don't see badgers too often now with all the variety in animal types. I'll always hate them the most though.
