Why we seem to love the name URIST.
« on: May 06, 2008, 06:19:00 pm »

This is just a general question for you all:

Why is it that we tend to default on the dwarf name "Urist" for our jokes or examples?

State your own reasons / examples! (I have a feeling I know what the most common one is going to be.)

Well I think it was One Dwarf Against the World which was crazy popular and written early enough to influence the community.  Plus Urist is pronounceable and badass.

Obviously it is the story, One Dwarf Against the World, and that Urist is a rather common dwarven name.

Well, it sounds like a dwarven name, it's easy to remember, and... I don't know.

I take credit for taking the fledgling trend and using it so much that now everyone can only think of Urist whenever the want to give an example.

We should have at least 3 good dwarf names. Just my opinion.

My first fortresses in the 2D version had my unit list flooded with Urists and Bomreks.

I blame One Dwarf Against the World too, ever since I read it the name Urist has been burned into my mind.

I also blame "One Dwarf Against the World". I had read it not too long after I started playing and browsing the forum and the name stuck.

I always liked Mistem just because it's one of the few that really fits a female dwarf.

Nil is pretty awesome too though it never seemed very 'dwarfy' to me.

Dishmab.

Dishmab just seems like that one dwarf you're always wanting to yell at.

For example, in my current fortress, Dishmab is the one guy always getting injured.  No respect for the management.
