Ideas for a roguelike.
« on: March 27, 2012, 10:56:41 am »

Hello everyone, I recently became obsessed with learning coding and making a roguelike. It'll probably never happen but I opened this thread so you can give your ideas for creatures, objects, levels etc.

I would like to see a roguelike with permadeath based on a dangerous japanese gameshow.

All deaths are permadeaths in roguelikes, but I like the Japanese gameshow idea.

Not all rougelikes have permadeath.

I have NEVER seen a roguelike without permadeath. Where can one find this game?

I think you can turn off permadeath in Dungeons of Dredmore.

Yo', yo', 'sup.

Roguelikes without permadeath... T4 has it, in one of the difficulty modes (Explorer) and a limited lives scheme in the default difficulty mode (Adventurer). Gearhead 1 has it, period, GH2 has it in a bit more limited manner. Dreadmore allows for it, yes. There's several more, but those are the big ones I can actually remember right now.

And yeah, several of the Mystery Dungeon games don't indulge.

Eight posts in and this subject is already off track! I plan on making this game a lot like Nethack.

I can't link right now, but two off the top of my head are:
Elona (It has an active topic in other games. Whenever you die, you have a choice of dying for good or reviving at your home with less money and some lost inventory.)
Rouge Survivor (You can choose permadeath or not.)

Ninja!(x5)

My only advice right now is to take ideas you like from the roguelikes you play. Roguebasin may help as well.

I wanted to see what monstrosities the DF community would create. I think mutant carp would be a good idea.

Ah but you see, the lower boards are relatively docile (enough)

You also haven't really given people much to run on. People will post crazy/interesting ideas if they have some motivation to do so, but 'give me cool ideas!' doesn't tend to work very well. If you can get people excited about something, then they'll start giving you feedback/ideas.

Japanese gameshow definitely has potential.
