Werehogs have worked for me both in the arena and in worldgen, they even become members of civs, and I'm trying to find one to recruit.  I've genned wereelephants and weremammoths too, but only after my arena test.

Maybe that the dwarves never died and everyone is just shunning them.

How exactly would one go about finding what sorts of werecreatures are in one's world?

I've only been able to gen a world, then create adventurers and take down the names of werecreatures in the starting towns for each human civ (dorfs and elves don't have towns)

I want to tell you they were bad men, cephalo.  I want to tell you that with a better overseer the Fortress never would've gotten so bad someone would get offed in a pointless fisticuffs.
But the sad truth charlie?
It was inevitable.

Go into entity_default in the Raw/objects folder.  You can change the DEFAULT_SITE_TYPE parameters of dwarves and elves to CITY.  Then they will have towns.  While you are at it, give them [BUILDS_OUTDOOR_FORTIFICATIONS].  There should end up being a few more instances of werecreatures though it tends to be mostly of one type.  Elves seem to have a higher rate of werecreatures around their towns.

To identify Lair locations easier, start a world into legends mode and do a XML dump.  Look for lone kobold, goblin, dwarf, elf, and human outcasts in the site listing.

I saw a werecoyote in my DF-mode fort.
He promptly disappeared, though.

Weird.
I imagine the light from the sun made all traces of his body disappear. :O So cupcake even the sun could kill him.

btw, has !!SCIENCE been done on what becomes of a retired adventurer who is a night creature?

If Toady ever got "wold gen continuing" working, things could get really interesting. (Like: Get a quest to kill your legendary wrestler/legendary dodger superhuman wereelephant adventurer who would probably rip you in half even if it isn't the night of the full moon interesting.)
you can get quests to kill retired adventurers.  especially if that adventurer is the enemy of the questgiver's civ.

Thrall Werebear. Become a legendary wrestler/striker/kicker/biter/dodger. Retire and wait until you get a quest to kill it.

We already can have a thralled bronze colossus, which is better. Especially if you're like me and mod bronze colossi to be made out of something extremely dense.

Can't, unless whales suddenly became non-aquatic.
