Farm darn you! Farm!
« on: March 26, 2012, 10:10:17 am »

So I've started a new fort and I just set up my farms. It's been two months and still neither of my farmers will go plant anything, I have plump helmet spawn, I have plump helmets set to every season, my dwarves have all the necessary labors, and yet they are standing around doing nothing "no job"! If they won't start farming soon there is going to be trouble. I've tried turning the labors off and on, I've tried putting different dwarves on it, nothing seems to work, I even built a new farm but still nothing. >:(

You covered most of the stuff I'd ask about, so let me ask you this.  Do you have the seeds you're wanting to plant?  It's easy enough to select stuff that's on the list that you don't actually have seeds for, and you might have missed the cancel messages in the shuffle.

Hmm, tough. Did you check your burrows yet? I can't think of anything else.

Maybe farming just seemed too elvish for your dwarfs. Let them work as hunters, fisherdwarfs and woodcutters.

Yes. It's in a lovely stock pile one z-level down, not forbidden, and dwarves are taking other items from those same stockpiles.

Yes I set plump helmets for all seasons on both farms.

1. Build farm plot with B then P.
2. Make sure every square of plot is Inside and on soil or mud with K.
3. Hover over plot with Q to make sure it's set to the correct crop for the season.
4. Have at least one dwarf with Planting(fields) labor enabled and isn't preoccupied.
5. Have some seeds available.
6. Make sure that the farmer has an accessible path to both the seeds and the farm plot.

If all of these steps are complete, then farming should happen.  Check all of these steps extremely carefully, because when these kinds of "My dwarf is starving" or "My dwarf won't do X labor," threads come up 9 times out of 10 the poster discovers that they accidentally closed off a path and swears up and down that they didn't.

Sadly no. My dwarves are walking all over the farms and steps 1-5 have been checked double checked and done again.
