All the creatures your adventurer can turn into.
« on: March 25, 2012, 11:57:20 pm »

These are all the creatures I know that your adventurer can turn into.
These are the ones that I know so far:

1:Vampire: Drink blood of a vampire to become one yourself. No need to eat, breathe, just to drink blood. You become more powerful, but sometimes your speed drops.
2:Husk: Husks are monsters which are nigh-invincible. You turn into one by going into a evil cloud, but make sure it is the right one, or you will probably become horribly disfigured at best. Recommended to make your companions go into the clouds first, and to see what happens.
3:Thrall: Same as husk, but ash cloud instead of evil.
4:Were-beast: Become one by letting it bite you (The bite has to go through the fat for this to work, though). Werewolves can regenerate body-parts at every full moon, so it's useful to become one once you've lost limbs.
5:Necromancer:Find a necro book in necro tower. You can raise undead and re-animate chopped off body-parts. Oh yeah.

Here's another site http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=101821.msg3010517#msg3010517 which tells you the pros and cons of certain were-beasts.

As far as I know, it's impossible to become a zombie and still be able to control yourself.  Although necromancers will happily resurrect your body after you die :P.  Other than that, I don't think you missed anything.

You forgot necromancer, actually. Technically not a transformation into another creature, but neither is vampirism for that matter. Some tags are added by either, though.

Well, from what I've heard, becoming a thrall is similar to becoming a husk. Sometimes there are ash clouds which sweep across terrifying landscapes. As for what they are, they are kinda like a type of monster.

So, a new meaning to the phrase "I am enthralled"? ;)

What's the difference between a Thrall and a Husk?

I'm going to be grossly wrong about this, never having experienced either, but the word "husk" makes me think of a dried, dishevelled corpse, perhaps like an unwrapped mummy, devoid of soul, and even perhaps internal organs (making it a walking crispbag-like skin?).  It may or may not be 'driven' by the same thoughts and emotions as when alive (possibly warped, though), and 'filled out' by the ethereal spirit of the being that once was not.

"Thrall" makes me think of something still 'human' physically (still wet and squishy if you stab it), but in and of itself mindless and under the control of an exterior intelligence.  Somewhere between a non-rotted/RL style of voodoo zombie and a 'simply' mesmerised "real person".

But that's probably not what they mean in DF, just giving my impressions prior to any encounters of my own.

thrall: A slave, servant, or captive.

Every time I've heard the word, it's usually hypnotized/mind-controlled beings in a videogame.

ingame, nothing.

all of the "monsterfication" you can get from evil regions is really the same thing, basically.  sure the name and a few details may shift around a bit due to procedural generation, but essentially a thrall and a husk are the exact same thing.

Note: Editing to include description and how to become in First post.
And, since no-one has said any I put were wrong, I might try and make this into some sort of guide for the people who want to become creatures.

I have heard that you can become a demon by drinking their blood, but I am unsure of the veracity of this statement.
