Sorry, pool's closed due to dehydrated babies
« on: March 25, 2012, 08:21:26 pm »

I've been experimenting with training barracks that are one tile wide and ten long, with trenches on either side filled with 5-6 water. Half the time someone successfully dodges they land in the water, and I've taken out the ramps so the have to make it to the stairs at the end. It seems to be working, they are all dabbling swimmers now but here's the thing. It's winter, second year and several of the recruits had babies. When a dwarf falls a z-level into water, she drops the baby. And can't seem to pick it back up, or path back to it after she gets out of the water. I only found this out after getting the "baby found dehydrated" message... there were two more in there, so I had to drain the pool.

I Salute you Sir. But make sure those recruits don't get a little mad at their kids drowning over and over.

The best part: The babies didn't drown.

However, this is significant science.  Infants in 4/7 or deeper are marked as unreachable, since there is no path there, and are never recovered.  This has the availability of removing infants from mothers to curb population.

You need to open up a masterwork wet bar with artifact stools to keep the bereaved parents happy while viewing their baby corpses. Perhaps some gentle mist as well.

I tried this with two 10-long bridges end to end, a pressure plate linked to the bridges at one end, and a lever set to pull that does nothing except act as idler bait at the other. Water and a long, damp path to freedom underneath.

Observations:

1. Same stuck baby problem, requiring periodic pool cleaning.

2. Dropped items in the pool gave my militia a heart attack because their favorite stack of bolts was unreachable.

3. Entire fortress unusually free from blood and grime.

4. Unlike adventure mode, if dwarves are just sitting there in the water with no path out they won't gain swimming skill.

Props for the automatic militia training system.

Excellent, I needed to find a reliable mother-baby seperator for the vampire baby project.

This has got to be the best method I've heard of for getting babies out of your population. :P

Wait, I just had a thought. What if I built some kind of automated baby-flushing system that drained the babies into a sealed vault filled with a quantum stockpile? Could... could that actually work? I mean it takes time, the mothers have to get good at dodging before they ever jump off the edge, but think of the possibilities for dwarven child care.

I don't think babies feed themselves... They need a responsible adult dwarf caretaker vampire to feed, water, and change them.

EDIT: I'm working on a baby collector right now. please hold.

You know what this means?  We can use the mermaid farming techniques on the dwarves.  Now you just need to mod dwarf baby bones as craftable...

And their skin tannable.
Counter the bad thought from a dead baby on a mother by giving her a new masterwork dwarf baby leather skirt. Preferable from her own baby.

No, a dwarf baby leather shield, it's what she would have used it for anyway.
