Random soot zombies?
« on: March 25, 2012, 07:47:34 pm »

I've embarked in a sinister land.  I get rains of putrid slime, which causes dizziness and nausea, but no evil ash clouds or anything of that sort.  However I had a troupe of three evil soot zombie cats show up at one point.  They got trapped in my cage traps no problem.  (I pitched 'em into the caverns, where they have been doing a good job keeping the cavern critters occupied.)  Then later a human caravan arrived, all the humans were evil soot zombies.  They immediately turned around and left the map.  Just now the captain of my marksdwarf squad suddenly turned into an evil soot zombie and started shooting up the place.   Nobody has any evil soot on them, so I'm baffled as to where exactly the zombieism came from.  However it's been almost exactly a year since the original soot zombies showed up, because the next human caravan just arrived since the zombie one.  Coincidence or related?  I have no idea.

edit: Welp, moot point.  A kitten somehow turned into an evil soot zombie and destroyed my entire iron-clad, well-trained military.  Then they rose as evil soot zombies and destroyed the fort....

Sounds like something was contaminated with evil soot. If it is on the floor, shoes can protect against it, so animals like the kitten get converted first.

Yes but where did the contamination come from?  With no evil soot on the map, can creatures actually bring evil soot from other biomes outside of the map? That's the curious part.

Are you sure you've never had any EGM's?

Nope.  The evil soot zombie cats appeared from out of nowhere, coming in from the edge of the map, already zombified.  Shortly after that the human caravan followed, already zombified.  The humans immediately left but the cats walked directly into the cage traps and were caught.  Then I pitted them straight into the caverns.

It's like the syndrome affected them before they actually arrived on the map.  I'm more baffled than anything as the fort has already collapsed.  But I'd love to know where the syndrome came from and whether I can expect similar Sudden Fun on other forts.  Especially since I could not find any evil soot on anything once the new zombies started to appear.

Incidentally, I trained up six legendary fighters while trying to kill that original soot zombie kitten.  It was nothing but a head and body trapped in a corner while my three sword- and three speardwarves beat it up over and over until they leveled to legendary.  Finally they were killed when the majority of the rest of the fort had turned into evil soot zombies and zergged them.
