Sun berries?
« on: March 25, 2012, 06:25:24 pm »

I've been trying to start a fort where I have access to sun berries in the new version. The raws suggest they should be in areas:

[WET][GOOD][BIOME:NOT_FREEZING]

...but I can't find any for the life of me. Anyone else have any luck yet?

Unless Toady's fixed it the [GOOD] and [EVIL] biome tags don't work still.

I believe it was fixed in the last patch.

He has ^^ Haven't managed to gen a world to my liking in the new version yet, but they should be available in suitable biomes. What kind of areas have you embarked and looked for them in?

Well, I've tried 4 different embarks so far, right now I'm in an area with 4 different biomes, including:
  • Joyous Wilds - Temperate Freshwater Swamp
  • Joyous Wilds - Temperate Broadleaf Forest
  • Mirthful - Temperate Grassland
  • Savage - Temperate Savanna

..but no luck. I before I looked at the raws I tried non-wet areas as well, but I think I've covered every possible good environment at least once now.

Also, I've found plenty of feather trees, so that part is working, it's just the sun berries I can't seem to find.

When you were in the GOOD regions, did you gather plants from just anywhere in the map, or specifically nearby the shores of ponds and rivers? I seem to recall from a 40d unicorn-harvesting fort that the sunberries are found close to the ponds.

I would usually just specify a large area, but I just cleared out the areas around the ponds on my current map, no luck. I'll go back and try on the previous areas now and get back to you in a few.

From my experience, GOOD and EVIL plants don't always appear all the time.  I generated two different worlds, both with good shrublands, and one grew good grass and the other didn't.  Evil biomes were similar, with glumprongs sometimes appearing and sometimes not.

You should still be able to buy them off traders.

[WET] does not mean "wetlands", [WET] means "only grows within 2 tiles of a source of water", typically a stagnant pond or stream.  If you see the [WET] trees, like willows, then it's a place to look for sunberries.

Also, yes, just get them from elves if you can.

Wait, really?  I thought it meant wetlands...  Well then!

This actually got me looking, so far about a 1/4 of my 4x4 embark has been de-shrubbed without luck.

Of course, I may just be out of luck, since I found out the place freezes in the winter.

Not freezing means "not a tundra or glacier".

Heh, then we shall see.  Since I'm denuding the whole map.  I'm kind of enjoying the Invaders:Off bit.
