Overseer's journal, Fall and Winter of 251:Fall1st of Limestone, 251I cannot believe it's already fall.
I'm going to start prioritizing the construction of the fortress. There's no way that
I'm going through the winter in this temporary shelter.
4th of Limestone, 251Holy Shit! Theres a raven flying around the inside of our cave.
I'm going to have to construct some animal traps, and hopefully we can
catch the bastard.
15th Limestone, 251Well, the raven left, but this experience has shown me that the front entrance is completely
defenceless, so I've ordered the carpenter to make some animal traps. I've also commissioned
a wooden crossbow, and I'm going to draft someone into the milita in an attempt to keep
the base safe.
17th of Limestone, 251I'm sure that some of the ponds are completely void of fish now that it's been two seasons without
the fish returning.
7th of Sandstone, 251We have carved out enough bedrooms in the permanent fortress to finally move into it,
but there are still piles of rubble strewn about the fort. I have lived in that sandy
hell hole of a cave for too long now to care about a few rocks.
13th of Sandtone, 251One of our wardogs has given birth to puppys, and this time I won't
butcher the mother and father, because they are too useful. It looks like these
puppys wont be orphans, and this may be the first time an animal in Flagfire hasn't been
abused at birth.
20th of Sandstone, 251A migrant wave has arrived,
bringing with them a seige engineer and an expert stone crafter.
Flagfire now has 14 more hands to clear the rubble from the fortress.
We also have 7 more mouths to feed and not enough food and drink to sustain them,
however I will just open up a second farm to grow more food. I have also ordered our
dwarves to build a craftdwarf's workshop, so we can put our new stonecrafter to good use.
3rd of Timber, 251The craftdwarf's workshop is up and running, and seeing as we have more than enough
barrels to meet our needs at the moment, I have instructed our stonecrafter to start
making crafts, toys, and other trinkets.
Also we can finally move into our permanent fortress, because the bedrooms have been set up.
Well, at least 9 of us can move into the permanant fortress, but the migrants will
have to ride out the winter in the cold sandy cave. TAKE THAT IMMIGRANTS!
14th of Timber, 251FUCK! The liaison and caravan have arrived much earlier than expected and I haven't
had the chance to finish very many stone crafts to sell yet. Hopefully I'll be able
to trade a few barrels of dwarven ale for somthing reasonable.
25th of Timber, 251I have traded a barrel of prepared food, a barrel of wine, and a barrel of gathered plants
for a bronze crossbow, and a copper spear. I plan to draft more dwarves into the milita
now that we have these extra weapons.
26th of Timber, 251While trading a barrel of prepared food wasn't much of a loss, we are short on our stores of
ale due to me trading for those weapons.
Winter:1st of Moonstone, 251The dining hall is 100% carved out, but there's still rubble everywhere as there
would be with any freshly dug cave, but I think I'm going to love the way this will come out,
as the there are a lot of brilliant blue cobalite walls, which will look absoultely
stunning once they have been engraved properly.
10th of Moonstone, 251The merchants left this morning, just as the stonecrafter finished a batch of very valuable
stonecrafts. *facepalm*. In other news, we have flooded an area for a new farm plot, and we
have some more beds
18th of Moonstone, 251Yay, more meat- I- I mean puppys
... but seriously, I'm slaughtering them.
In other news, one of the cavy pups has grown to be a sow, and I'm not going to
slaughter it because its someones pet and I'm not THAT heartless.
22nd of Moonstone, 251Our engravers seem to have some sort of phychological issues, and I only make this assumption
because they have decorated the walls with some pretty horiffying shit, for fucks sake,
dwarves are going to be eating in there
2nd of Opal, 251I have set up 3 more farm plots in a new area now that we have multipule farmers in the
fortress and I want to maximize their potential and have them farming round the clock. We have
plenty of food, but I don't think we can ever have too much.
8th of Opal, 251We're having a shortage of beds at the moment, and the newset wave of immigrants is without
anywhere to sleep at the moment. I've ordered the carpenter to construct more beds,
but we are consuming wood faster than our tree cutters can cut the trees down. I'm regreting
not getting another axe while the traders were here.
9th of Opal, 251A few cage traps have been placed at the entrance to the fortress, and some animal traps have
been placed outside the fort. The cage traps will hopefully get us some food.
10th of Opal, 251One of our horse foul is fully grown now, and I'm going to slaughter it, but I'm only doing
this for the leather, I don't really care about the meat at this time.
13th of Opal, 251Damn wild animals are crafty, one of them stole the fish from the trap without getting caught.
Apparently, he managed to save himself from certain slaughter.
14th of Opal, 251 Success, we have caught somthing in our taps... it's a rat. Well, it wasn't what I hoped, but at least
it's somthing.
20th of Opal, 251I ordered a wall to be built and one of our stupid dwarves built it while on the wrong side
thusly sealing himself in a hole.
5th of Obsidian, 251 The liaison left today, but before he departed, I requested that he bring with him some
fluxstone and picks the next time he comes back with merchants.
11th of Obsidian, 251I've noticed that we are short on prepared food, as a matter of fact were out and our
dwarves have been eating raw puppy meat for the past month... god damn, I'm abusive towards animals.
12th of Obsidian, 251It's raining for the first time in almost a year. Hopefully we will get a heavy enough rain
to fill the two drained ponds back up.
19th of Obsidian, 251The rain let up, and the ponds are... 2/7 of the way full. -_-
Considering how little rain we got, I might have to channel water from the river to fill
up the ponds, but I don't think I'll be able to get to that before the end of my term as overseer.
In other news, a herd of yak cows is just outside the fort. I might try and go hunt some of them.
22nd of Obsidain, 251The herd of yak cows seems to be migrating from west to the east. I doubt that I'll be able to hunt
them before they migrate too far away from the fort.
24th of Obsidain, 251Just as I expected, they migrated away before I could hunt them down. Oh well,
I shouldn't be needing them, as I have a decent amount of meat.
1st of Granite, 252It's been a long year, and I have decided to retire from my position of overseer and become
an animal caretaker. :3 Kind of ironic considering that I'm a puppy butcherer. I'm leaving
my journal on the desk in the overseers office for the next person in charge to hopefully
learn from.
Pictures coming soon. I will pass on the map to the next person.
