Similarly, "keep 15 pants" will have your clothiers get to work every time your pant situation becomes dire.

I suggest "keep 15 + N" pants, where N is the number of dwarves you have... but I miss that DFHack command too.

If I'm seeing it right dress (or robe, not sure which, perhaps both) also count as shirts, so that might be nice. I wouldn't be surprised if dress/robe/toga counts as both shirt and trouser.

I let the goblins cloth my masses.
Oh, ick! D: Do you know where that -troll fur thong- has been?

Certainly you could argue that DF is a lot like The Sims, only... you know... with more vomit and decapitation.
If you launch a wooden mine cart towards the ocean at a sufficient speed, you can have your entire dwarf sail away in an ark.

At least once a year, my dwarves relish in Goblin Christmas.  Many presents are given out to the fortress.  Weapons are sent to the forges to be reformed into better weapons and furniture.  Corpses are sent to the butcher shop to feed the fortress.  Clothing is had by all.  Any left over clothing gets improved by the legendary clothier using masterfully woven, masterfully dyed ropereed cloth

if you have too many xcave spider silk socksx give them to the caravan. i wait for my dorfs to un-own them and have a stockpile set up for the stuff right next to my depot. it *seems* to be working in this version, as i don't actually see a whole lot of the old stuff in the bedrooms, and the stockpile is always full (a few dorfs do have a lot of worn out clothing they keep, but that may be a personality issue??). after it gets there i just use that to purchase anything i want from the traders.

Oh, trust me, I send the caravans off with plenty of clothing. It took the last one two months to pack it all up.

"Ahhh yes, let's see... those barrels of Longland beer look lovely. We have some slightly worn clothing we'd love to give you in exchange.... how much do you suppose those wagons will carry?"

What is the ideal set of clothes with minimum effort?

What is the standard time it takes for a piece of clothing to deteriorate? There is information on the wiki here but I don't think there's ever been a scientific investigation. Maybe Toady has answered this somewhere? If not, maybe a question for Future of the Fortress?

It would be helpful to know what the lifetime of a given piece of clothing is. For instance, does quality or material increase the durability of the item? What about multiple layers of clothing... do the undermost layers wear less since they are less exposed to the environment, etc?

I kill elves for cloth, and then I make clothing at a sweatshop room.

If you built a proper fortress and use custom stockpiles for everything, go ahead and setup a stockpile each for chest, foot, leg clothing that is exceptional and above. Fill it up and periodically check the stocks to see if it is time to refill.

Haven't done 34.06 much yet as I was waiting for DFHack to update, but I had my clothier cranking out trousers, pants, and socks, and the leatherworker making boots in anticipation.  I import tons of cloth and leather from caravans, plus I make my own from dead animals and the pig tails and rope reeds I grow, so I should have a decent surplus.  I just keep the tasks on repeat, but perhaps I should set up a workflow for it.

Actually no: When a dwarf claims an article of clothing it (probably) gets marked as used, and not counted.  So at "15" you'll have "15 unused items".  Similarly, I set barrels for 10, and it does "keep 10 barrels empty".

Guess what just updated?  :D I've been playing .06 without dfhack and it's been kinda fun. Glad it's back though. I'm sure you'll have a decent surplus, I'm doing just what you do and I've got a huge surplus, especially when you count all the decorated goblin clothes. I also periodically sell my worn out crap to the elves, as I figure they are like most hippies and into reducing, reusing and recycling. Keeping my dwarves well clothed doesn't seem to take a lot of thought or effort, really.

What the hell did I write there?  That's supposed to be tunics and trousers.

It's uh, to give the male dorfs happy thoughs from seeing topless dorf women.  Yeah, that's the ticket!

I don't seem to be having much luck with keeping my Dwarves clothed even with an active clothing industry.

I already ran an extensive textiles industry from .31 onwards and didn't have much trouble adapting, but I still seem to be saddened by the lack of my Dwarfs wanting red capes :(
