You are a Wizard; Able to harness raw magic; Able to let fire rain from the skies; Able to wield powers that lesser mortals can`t comprehend.
Well, that`s what wizards like to tell the lesser mortals. The truth is quite different.
Wizards summon and bind spirits, or demons how they are also called, to their will and let them perform all those magic tasks. No wizard wields any magic power himself; The only thing that differentiates them from the commoners is their knowledge about how to summon spirits.
When and how the first Wizard learned how to summon demons is unknown; But since then only selected, and often noble, individuals were instructed in the ancient art of Summoning.
You are one of those selected individuals; Having received rigorous training from childhood on you are now ready to begin your life as a Wizard.
What Spirits exactly are is unknown. (And most wizards don`t care about it, anyway.) What is known is that they hail from a place aptly named "the other place" and that they are able to use magic to influence the world of the humans.
On rare occasions a Spirit may enter the World of the Humans on his own free will; But usually he is summoned and enslaved by a wizard.
Spirits hate their enslavement with a passion and will gladly use any opportunity to take revenge upon their Summoner.
Demons are made up of something called "Essence". Essence is raw magic and it allows them to perform deeds and miracles far beyond the power of any Mortal. Demons can shapeshift; Demons can hurl fireballs at their enemies etc.
The Essence of a Demon also represents their life force. By being in the mortal world, by being wounded or by the casting of Spells and the performing of work their essence is diminished.
All demons are also weakened by metals of any kind, but especially by iron and silver. Even an ordinary mortal is able to mortally wound a demon with a silver weapon!
When their Essence starts getting low their usefulness will be reduced- While still being able to cause trouble for the Wizard. (Unless their essence is really, really low.)
That`s the Reason why demons are often dismissed after they have served a certain time. The procedure is almost the same as summoning a demon, only that other spells are being used.
Making a mistake here has the same result as messing up the summoning.
A Demon dies when it`s essence reaches zero; Being back in the other place restores their essence.
Summoning a Demon sounds easy at first. Basically the Wizard has to draw two pentacles, one to protect himself, and one to trap the demon. Then he has to recite the right spell and a demon is summoned and has to obey the orders of his master.
There are a few caveats, though.
1. If the Wizard messes up the pentacles the demon is free and able to attack the Summoner.
2. If the Wizard leaves his Pentacle without having properly bound and dismissed the spirit the Spirit is free and able to attack the Summoner.
3. If the Wizard messes up the binding spell the Spirit is free and able to attack the Summoner.
Quite a few Wizards don`t survive their first Summoning.
Once the Spirit is properly summoned you aren`t safe, either. You still have to issue your command- And that`s also tricky.
Demons are cunning and will try to find loopholes in your wording. The Summoning Spells restrict the spirits and makes them unable to directly harm the Summoner.. Unless they can find a loophole or an ambiguity in your orders.
Should you mess up the summoning the demon is free to attack you- However, the other place will try to draw him back. So, if you manage to evade the demon long enough he will vanish again and you live on.
Imps
Often the first kind of demon a Wizard summons. Imps are considered to be the weakest kind of spirit, with no great powers. They are mischievous and enjoy playing pranks. Their abilities to shapeshift are pretty limited, most often they take the form of some rodent or some small animal, like a cat or toad. They are often used as expendable spies and messengers for they lack the power to fight against stronger spirits.. Most of them can`t even properly harm a wizard who fails to summon them correctly.
Ghouls
Ghouls are lesser Djinn, but much more powerful than Imps. They are able to shapeshift into many forms, but they prefer the guise of scavenging animals or corpses- Sometimes combining both. While quite cunning they are also pretty feral and unable to use more advanced magic. They are mostly used as fighters and really love to consume corpses.
Gargoyles
Gargoyles are lesser Djinn, often taking the form of feral winged demons. They aren`t able to use advanced magic but are good fighters and guardians. They are unable to enter holy places, though, and turn to stone when exposed to sunlight. (They revert to their original form as soon as the sunlight fades, though.)
Elementals
Elementals are strange Spirits that are associated with one of the four primary elements- Wind, Fire, Water and Earth. They aren`t very intelligent and act more as a force of nature.
Djinn
Djinns are pretty powerful demons, able to assume many forms and able to use powerful magic. Combined with their inherent cunning and intelligence they can be formidable servants- Though, the same qualities also make them dangerous to summon. Djinn are usually the most powerful demons a single wizard can summon.
Cockatrices
Cockatrices are Djinn of medium power. They often take the shape of some weird reptile/Other creature halfbreed. They have the power to turn mortals and lesser Spirits into stone with their gaze.
Vampires
A Vampire is a special kind of Djinn- They are even more cunning and able to hypnotize humans with their eyes and their voice, turning them into obedient minions. Thus special caution is needed in order to summon them. The shapeshifting abilities of vampires are limited; They can only assume the form of humans, bats and wolves. They also have several weaknesses: Sunlight will burn them, they are unable to cross water, are repelled by holy symbols and by silver (Even more so than ordinary demons.) and can only enter a house if they are invited to do so. (Though, they can use their hypnotic abilities to get permission.) They are the most formidable Djinn spellcasters, though, and are quite hard to kill. Vampires are also bloodthirsty and love to consume human blood.
Afrits
Afrit are demons not unlike the djinn but usually more powerful. They prefer to rely on pure strength and use their formidable magical powers mostly to augment their strength. Summoning an Afrit is a daunting task usually performed by two or more wizards.
Marids
Marids are the most powerful classified type of Demons- There are demons out there who are more powerful, but those can best be described as Gods. Marids posses unbelieveable strength and are able to wipe out lesser demons with ease. They are not often summoned, and when only by a group of experienced wizards.
It is also possible to enchant an object by trapping a spirit within. In order to do so you put the object you want to enchant into the pentacle and perform the summon as usual. If succesfull the Spirit will be trapped and the object will take on magical abilities according to the power of the Spirit. There are a few caveats, though:
-If the Spirit is too powerful he may escape and/or destroy the item.
-If an enchanted item is destroyed the spirit will be set free- And he will be angry.
-Using an enchanted object will use some of the power of the trapped spirit up; Once that power is gone the object becomes useless until it is recharged.
-Enchanted items can be recharged by placing them into a pentacle and performing a simple ritual. This is pretty safe, but requires some time.
-The material of the object is important. Gems possess some innate essence, thus the item can be used longer without you having to recharge it. Metals, but especially Iron and Silver, weaken the spirit thus making it less likely that the demon can break the item and escape- But, in turn, the enchantment will be weaker. Organic materials like wood allow the item to recharge itself slowly over time, but such materials also allow the demon to escape more easily. If an item consists of different materials it will combine the powers according to the amount of each material- For example, a wooden staff studded with bands of iron would recharge itself, but more slowly than an ordinary staff would, but would be able to contain a more powerful demon.
By providing a demon with a suitable body you will be able to create a servant that will lose less essence- None at all, as long as it remains inactive. The downside is, that the power of the demon will also be limited. (It can`t shapeshift, for example.)
There are two ways of providing a demon with a body:
Using a corpse. By summoning and binding a demon to a corpse you will create a zombie. A corpse is unsuitable for stronger demons, but lesser Djinn and especially Ghouls are suited for this procedure. This Art is called necromancy and it`s outlawed- Though, not many wizards care about rules and Kings and Lords are often willing to overlook such practices as long as the wizard serves them.
By using a makeshift body from various materials a golem can be created. The strength of a golem depends on the material used- For further reference have a look at the enchantment section. The bigger the golem is, the stronger the spirit within must be in order to move.
Pentacles are the most important tool of any wizard; Only with the help of one of those a Demon can be summoned. A standard pentacle is enough in order to summon a Spirit- But there are various glyphs that can be added to it in order to create even more powerful pentacles with various effects. When drawing a pentacle you can decide to add any glyph you know to it- But you won`t be informed whether you did it right or not. (Unless you can spot a glaring mistake.) You can`t add glyphs to an already drawn pentacle; If you want to utilize their effects you have to draw a new one.
