5-10 seconds.

In one of my 34.05 fortresses I have what I call bursty lag, such as what you describe.  I associate it with things like large waterfalls but this site has none at all.  It is possible that underground some water is falling into magma, or magma is falling into the Clown Tent.  I have not checked that.  It's annoying, though, isn't it?

This can be linked to weather/temperature calculations at the turn of month/season, especially if you have bodies of water freezing or melting. Your high spec wont help all that much due to the sheer number of calculations DF will be performing, and DF can only use 2 gig of RAM anyway.

i am aware of the weather/temperature calculations at the turn of month/season. they usually stop the game for about 3 seconds but this doesnt hurt me much.

Stops like that can alo be due to unseen enemies on your map, probably ambushing goblins, though I notice it most when the elves send a seige, as there can be literally hundreds of them and thier mounts, all clogging up my pathfinding calculations...

Of course, the most likley problem is simply that you are trying bigger than 5x5 - thats gonna be a struggle for most machines to churn over, and you can easily get by with less space.

i really would like to have larger embarks. so why does it lag on embarks > 5x5 ? someone must know something about it..

Computers today are simply not powerful enough to manage that much awesomeness, give it a few years and it might work (unless DF complexity is increased enough to compensate). I run either 3x3 or 4x4 max, compy is a 2 year old laptop so can't manage much more :>

Starting from 31.18 I have the same 'mini lag' on default 4x4 embark, only more severe - every 2-3 seconds. I've tried many stuff, but the only thing that helped is smaller embark :(

don't forget that larger maps = exponential growth in tiles, meaning more pathfinding to do.

df on multicore and 64bit would rock. imagine being able to embark on a 10x10 map or larger. you could have 500 dwarfs and export mundane tasks onto other sorts of managers. what a wet dream

5x5 is large lol.  As with gildarumarth 4x4 is my max unless I have a large mega project that requires a long map.  The most blatant reason that big maps cause large is that there is just so much more path finding to do and more units to do it for generally.  Also you have to remember that it also increases for each and every z-level as well.  That's just a lot to track and take care of.

I suggest that if you want to play along a large area do a rectangular embark instead of a square.  Most things can be easily built in a 3x3, 4x4 provides some extra space and if you can run a 5x5 you are doing pretty well.  But yeah, try a 7x3 or something like that

it lags because 6x6 and large is really hard.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.
