aren't goblins suppose to always be hostile? if not, what caused them to be peaceful to me but not my followers?

I've had ambushes from bandit groups and one bandit often fights another; which allows me to recruit them.

Your followers from a different civ or something?

...

Were you sneaking?

i tried to sneak as soon as i saw that there was arrows flying into my followers skulls. i walked up to an archer, tried to aim an attack, only to get the "are you sure you want to attack" text. that's when i realized they were not only NOT hostile but they actually said "its nice to finally meet you" and "oh how dull my life is" or something along those lines

There's every possibility that you are the demons.

On a more serious note, there is a chance that these may be wanderers from your own civ, and you have in fact, recruited from an enemy civ that regards you as a hero.

Outsiders don't have any civilization ties, so any sentients you encounter will be friendly. Goblins are hostile (IIRC) because of conflicts between your starting civ and theirs; an outsider isn't a member of any groups and thus isn't considered hostile by anyone until you personally do something to piss them off.

I am now tempted to gather a goblin army thanks to this thread.

I was ambushed by a group of taru-taru with moogles,  i tried to use my outsider status to make friends with them, but to no avail.  As some sort of weird coincidence a manticore spawned at the same area that I was ambushed and started slaughtering it's way through the taru-taru.  I killed the manticore, expecting some sort of heartfelt thanks for saving their lives, but no the taru-taru continued to try their darndest to kill me.  I just walked off after they ran out of bolts.

So what is it that goblins have that taru-taru do not? I walked into a goblin war camp and recruited pretty much everyone, then I went to a keep to fight the demon leader of the human civ.

Maybe that the dwarves never died and everyone is just shunning them.

Dunno, but a human merc leading a goblin onslaught looked awesome in my head.

The [LOCAL_BANDITRY] token seems to both cause the entity in question to ambush the player and to be hostile to everyone in any groups in any sort of proximity to their own? (I think, needs testing.) I've had adventurers from the other side of the world and outsiders be cool with bandits, k-bolds and goblins. Killing enough monsters that are enemies of the entity in question such that you become a hero to them (and you're not also an enemy due to attacking civ members) might also cause them to not be hostile. They'll still ambush you, though, they just won't attack and are willing to chat or join you. Bandit groups don't have a entity entry defined in the raws, but presumably they have one hardcoded in somewhere and it has this token. Interestingly, if you have an adventurer from a civ with [LOCAL_BANDITRY] that also builds actual visitable sites (i.e. cities), then even civ members not from your starting village will try and kill you on sight.

It gives me a funny image in my mind of bandits before they ambush say, "Whoa guys, that's the vampire killer innit? I'm your biggest fan!"

thank you, you have solved much of the mystery of how playing a goblin in adventure mode works.  in order to NOT be forced to purge the world, i must remove local banditry.
