It was meant to be a small fort, honest!
« on: March 24, 2012, 09:18:39 pm »

Ok... So in the new version I wanted to test out adventuring since I usually spend all my time in Fortress mode.

After I spent about a week getting various people killed in horrible ways... I learned one thing.
Being without good armor SUCKS!

So I came up with a well tested solution...

1. Make a small fort
2. Build it just long enough to process some Candy.
3: Make some nice candy armor in some lead bins.
4. Abandon and go loot with my adventurer!

Simple right? No plans for a long term fort or anything, just in and out!
Except... Upon landing in the spot, I dig right down to underworld and found... Some kick ASS huge open spaces.
I'm thinking these ROCK< this would be the perfect place for a vast natural underground city... Oh well!
I get to the third layer, and MANG It's almost all marble! Wow, shame I;m not going to use this fort? Just make some candy and go!

Ok so finally I start smelting and getting melt production up, training up an armorsmith and smelting vast amounts of other irons to level him... I explore the underworld a bit more and find.. Not one but TWO Magma pipes, huge ones. I'd always wanted some magma pipes just for easy dumping. And then, THEN I find Candy pillers poking up through the ground!
huge amounts of candy for the picking.  "Well shoot, maybe I will come back to this place and make a fort AFTER adventuring? I begin to think.  And then...
And THEN while explore, I come across a:
"Curious underground structure"

FUCK!!!

I've been playing for over a year and this is only the second Hidden Fun Fort I'd EVER Encountered!
The last one I found was in a map that got corrupted and I could never go back!!!

So here I am, in my fort That I made in a hurry, no thought to making anything grand or nifty, ugly rooms, intending to abandon it and never look back... And NOW I find myself wanting to stay! I mean.. It's not liek an adventurer could brave the Hidden Fun Fort or anything by himself.
Choices choices!

Fun Fact: all the zombies disappear when you abandon.  I tried to have an adventurer brave the Fun, but there were no zombies or clowns.  Total bummer.

Now, do the right thing.  No... Do the wrong thing.  The dwarven thing.  Continue.

You'd be surprised how often things that were intended as temporary become permanent.

Currently That is what I am doing...
SInce I put candy production above all other things, I already have half the fort in candy armor.
Going to train them up and Storm the "FUN" on my own.

I think this fits perfectly into my nature with DF. (and probably many others');

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

DF, you are the reason for my rubbish sleeping pattern!

I also agree that you should continue. Clearly you were destined to build a magnificent fort there, whether you realised it or not.

Get the seed and worldgen parameters. Regen it. Embark on the same site intending to start a fortress. Finish your work on the original, abandon, adventure. Build the fortress in the new world.

Also, is there a sedimentary layer? Even if not, seed and params please?  :P

Make your fortress into a huge dungeon, with puzzles and trap rooms, place all candy and artifacts in lead/golden/platinum bins in the final treasure room.

Keep all cave entrances open (and maybe call the circus) if you want some "random encounters" in your dungeon.

Have your cake and eat it too! Make a copy of the world, run one as a hidden structure fort and the other as an adventurer haven. Profit!

Posting the world seed:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

No idea how to find my location though without abandoning and reclaiming, guess i could make a copy and try it out.

On a Dwarfy note...

One of the Magma pipes is slightly taller then the Hidden Fun Fort.
Thusly.. I shall make a channel and eventually FLOOD WITH MAGMA!!!

Well THAT didn't last long...

Somehow the Clowns found their way into the Magma sea... From there they came up through the Magma Pipe into the lower cavern layer...
From THERE My poor small militia, coating in candy though they were... Could not cope with such horrors from beyond.
The whole underground is one fire right now and my Dwarves are in tantrum spiral.

Nothing to do now but abandon and come back with an adventurer!!!

Sounds like he pulled the magic candycane.

The residents of the neither neither world don't like people stealing the candy cane. Its magic!

Actually a bit of both... Looking back I realized I breached the HFS by accidentally cutting into the magma sea.
Since the whole point of this was mining Candy as fast as possible, I actually breached the Circus early on, but sealed it up again. That makes "most" of the clowns go away, so you are more safe breaching the other ones, going down as far as you want.

At the bottom of one, I accidentally bore into the Magma sea and it began to drain out into the Circus.
I didn't think much of it since I "THOUGHT" Clowns couldn't fly through Magma...

Ironically, I didn;t get to yanking the candy cane till the very end... With the underground in flames, Clowns ransacking the fort, I ordered one of my few remaining Dwarves to yank the Candy Cane.

With  the clowns everywhere else, he actually remained the last one alive.
