Ah, I misunderstood; I thought you were saying they should use beatings to teach discipline. Which is just plain wrong. And completely uncivilized *glares at USA and the European south and east*. In fact, any country that still allows corporal punishment of any kind does not even deserve to be called a word with "civilized" in it. They're just "un".
Please excuse the moronic bigoted little brother of the rest of the US called the Deep South.

When I was a rotten little shit my father made me pick my own switch, if it wasn't good enough, he'd find a worse one. I rarely made the same mistake twice.

That sort of punishment is a stopgap to prevent future incidences of bad behavior at best, since it doesn't teach anything useful. It just teaches to fear authority and punishment, not why the behavior was bad in the first place. If we want to teach kids to think, and not be sheep doing whatever the person with the whip says, then punishment should never be considered any sort of "fix" to bad behavior.

Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Unless you're trying to raise a generation of slave-children who won't question their robot masters, in which case all systems are go for corporal punishment.

I think it makes children more chaotic and cruel rather than fearful. There are children who find nothing wrong with getting beaten by a "father" or "teacher" figure which means they are very likely to do it themselves later.

When I was a rotten little shit my father made me pick my own switch, if it wasn't good enough, he'd find a worse one. I rarely made the same mistake twice.

My parents never raised a hand at me, and hardly even shouted, yet I never "repeated mistakes" either. No psychological or physical torture needed. It's been proven over and over again that nothing good comes from beating kids. All you'll ever accomplish is hurting your kids. At best, you know, since the risk of fucking them up for life increases with every kind of abuse.

I'm not advocating corporal punishment solely, it should be used with positive reinforcement.

I'm not advocating corporal punishment solely, it should be used with positive reinforcement.

^ Not every behavioral issue comes with a pacifistic resolution, especially with already-malevolent children that are hellbent on being shits.

I, myself, never got beat by my father even though he had major aggression issues. Why? I never did a single thing to piss him off, followed rules, and was respectful. Why should a child hellbent on causing trouble get away with a 'sit in the corner' punishment? [Also proven to be completely ineffective] This just leads to other children finding such behavior not only rewarding but unpunishable since they're all considered perfect flowers, even though the flowerbed needs to be weeded occasionally.

Also, I am not pro-beating or anything as such, I'm a pacifist myself. I know that children don't always listen to gentle instruction. Just mentioning there's never a one-method answer to any issue, especially behavioral problems.

Yeah, that's why corporal punishment is so common in child psychology.

The problem is that corporal punishment is really only effective with children too young to make associations more complex than "I did this and then it hurt." Once a child is capable of reasoning they're just gonna assume you hit them because you're a dick and endeavor not to behave better but to be better at not getting caught.

Spanking and beating a child are two completely different things.

You all certainly speak like people with no experience with children, especially your own.

Once again, spoken by a man with no experience with children.

Children are not mentally retarded, they can typically understand the motivation behind a spanking [punishment for an action they should not commit]and less so the motivation behind a beating. [alcohol abuse or anger issues]

I have never once beaten my child, but I spanked her. There's a very large difference both in motivation and emotion during the actions that gives completely different meanings to a child. My girl did not cry, did not take it as me 'being a dick' but took it to mean that she isn't supposed to rub paint on the walls after I gently tell her that her crayons are not meant for the walls.
