I'm from Turkey. I wish I was getting education in a different country.

Ah, I misunderstood; I thought you were saying they should use beatings to teach discipline. Which is just plain wrong. And completely uncivilized *glares at USA and the European south and east*. In fact, any country that still allows corporal punishment of any kind does not even deserve to be called a word with "civilized" in it. They're just "un".

Exactly, education builds the personality of children and beating them when they take wrong decision only makes them more likely to take extreme actions. teachers are getting exiled for criticising the government and cruel teachers only get slap-on-the-wrist punishments. Turkey only looks civilized because it's usually compared to the fanatic middle east countries. The reason for this is, Turkey needed a lot of teachers and people who knew nothing about teaching became teachers. They knew nothing about student psychology and pedagogy. My old geography teacher is originally a topographical engineer. I think teachers are getting a lot more better at teaching nowadays.

Anyway, it's getting off-topic because of me again.

I can't learn maths because I won't need it and I never got an acceptable answer to the "why we learn this crap?" question. I'm going to the twelfth grade. It's the final grade and after that it's university. Find me a logical reason why I am learning integral calculus in 12. grade. I'm never going to be involved in a career that involves mathematics and majority of the class too.

They don't teach us English (important in this modern day), how to treat simple injuries (important for emergencies), formal debate and public speaking (social skills), philosophy and critical thinking (important for... being able to think?)

They teach us integral calculus. They teach us algebra with involution. They teach us things we will never need when we don't even know how to speak in public.
Pathology as in the study of diseases? Hell, half of the examples we get in Calculus here are about stuff like that. You'll need to be able to find out roughly how quickly a bacteria can spread, and how much of which chemicals are produces or expended over time. That's where integrals come in. Metal musicians play music, and you can write way better music if you understand chords. (Which are based on mathematical relations.)

I think you quoted wrong person. I meant pathologist as guy who performs autopsies and determines cause of death. Which is probably what you meant but i didnt understand.

I dont like maths becouse i always wanted to become pathologist or metal musician that is able to live on money from music.
Becouse both things are exciting. Dont get me wrong, im not psycho, i just was always fascinated with human body. There is something that disgusts but yet fascinates people in it. And well, not much of people want to be pathologist, so its kinda good job. And i think if math wouldnt be mandatory i would happily learn it. But still i prefer biology any time of day.

You were going to quote this :P

And how do you get get calculus questions based on diseases? We never get "questions" here just a bunch of weird numbers, letters and a question mark in the end. I never thought calculus can be applied in... anything :P Just kidding but I always thought people like engineers had to study things like that.

No intent to start a shitstorm but uh... don't you guys think this thread is a little weird with the thread starter being DrPoo, the kid who started a shitstorm a while ago due to his lack of critical thinking?

But I guess I'll be joining this smug circle after all:

Kids should be taught that fats do not transform into muscle.

Alternatively basic anatomic education must be given to every single person.

Have you ever heard the term "mph"? Derivations like that basic calculus (though we have equations to short circuit all the heavy lifting there). Calculus is one of those things that you don't really /need/ in many places, because there's other ways to do it, but judicious application can make things a lot easier. Any sort of statistical analysis, or trying to find something (like speed, acceleration, or rate of change in acceleration) in terms of one factor as related to another factor (distance/time, change in speed/time, change in acceleration/time) is probably going to be helped by knowing some calculus for example.

Music and math have always had some strong correlations. And science and math, too. You don't need them to be a good musician, but if you're playing electric instruments it doesn't help. Heck, you've heard of Queen right? Brian Mays has a PHD in Astrophysics and built a bunch of his equipment, like his guitar, himself, in addition to composing a number of Queens big songs.

Art Garfunkel, who I'm sure you've heard of, was just shy of a Doctorate in pure mathematics. He does still have a masters. Dexter Holland from the Offspring is another one. And these are just musicians that are /explicitly/ involved in something involving lots of math - most every good musician I've met knows some math decently, and most every band is only helped by having someone know it pretty well.

As Diane Nalini said: "Most musicians I know have a strong grasp of mathematics. They have to. Keeping the beat, counting out divisions of beats, thinking about harmony. Music theory is almost dauntingly mathematical."

Yeah, music is math. My old Choir Leader and conductor said that even the spacing of the notes is related to math (although I failed to see why it was back then, because I was a still young kid). Not that it's necessary to learn math in order to do music, but yes, it is a fact that music is math.

Integral calculus specifically will help if you want to learn how to chart musical waveforms, and understand how digital systems convert signals to analog (at least that's what I can tell from what I've seen of it). I honestly wish I had a better understanding of it than I do right now because I'm trying to wrap my head around making audio signal effects with computer programs.

... Having read this wiki article to find out how this relates to sound, I think I'm going to start self-teaching myself a bit of this stuff. Because I think I need to know this. @_@;

You're going to need chemistry and physics for medical school.  And for pathology itself, too. Therefore maths.

I think he means pathology as in the medical speciality, what in other places is called pathological anatomy.

Actually chocolate is kinda healthy, especially bitter one which has more cocoa than milk in it if you eat it like square per day, can eat bit more, but dont eat whole in one day:P

That's virtually the definition of moderation.  The question is whether it's possible to have a thing in moderation.
