I never do anything on PE, becouse why the fuck i should waste my energy and sweat myself and then smell? All we do in PE is playing soccer, and i fucking hate soccer, its idiotic to me, running trying to kick a ball is pointless, i always have wondered why is there even PE, hell i would want to have any other subject at time of PE. Becouse for me school isnt something like people at my age think, as prison you must go to. I find it fun learning new things, i only hate PE in school, but i also dont like maths, while they are quite much required in real life, i dont know the point of some abstractional stuff we learn there. Plus PE with my class is pointless, becouse they have no teamwork, there are 2 very good players in our class which basically play the game themselves, since they are selfish, and then blame it on us "omg why did u miss" and when he misses he just says "shit happens". If i had mandatory sport i would try to not go to PE or not bring sports wear for sake of not doing anything. Becouse PE is pointless, tiring, boring and teaching kids how many curse words exist.
PE is exercise. Some people can release their energy in reading or studying science, but others need physical activity to unwind.

Also, what sort of abstract stuff can't you see the use for in math? We might be able to help. They don't do a very good job of explaining what you'd use some things for, but the reason is that the explanation would probably take a really long time, and what you're learning is just the basis for everything else you might learn in college mathematics.

I don't know how things are in Poland, but here in America everyone has a hard on for math and PE. I never much like math as much as I should, considering how useful it is in certain careers, but yeah, physical education is pointless. Maybe not pointless, but in it's current state it's incredibly ineffective. I personally don't see any way around it though, kids would rather stand around and text than exercise. At least that's what would happen in gym class (Just finished it for good last semester, unless I somehow have to take it in college? :o).

By the way DarkWolf, How do you say 'shit happens' in Polish?

I'm going to come back out of the shadows for a moment to set things back on track. What I proposed was a program from an early age that was separate from what we have today, agree or disagree, that was my example of a method of creating discipline, although there are multiple ways to gain willpower and discipline. This thread isn't about the flaws in the schools PE system and why we hate them. Let's get back on track.

Heh, threads get derailed, it's the natural order of things.

I still think that a different school program won't fix things, because the problem isn't so much the program as it is, but the fact that the goal of school is quite unclear, and that therefore school looks like a pointless waste of time and energy. It doesn't help triggering willpower and discipline.

educational games (which is really an oxymoron)
It is not. Nothing I've found is better at teaching me geography than Medieval II Total War and Hearts of Iron II.  :P

Anyway, what I forgot to mention is that forcing students to do a sport isn't going to promote discipline at all. To become disciplined, the student has to impose discipline on (her/him)self.

Ha, yes, but the point of Medieval II Total War was not to teach you geography. Or history. Or anything for that matter !

Oddly enough, you learn a lot more things from games that do not try to teach you things, than games that do. Once the point of a game is something else than having fun, then it's not a game anymore.

Shit happens translates to "gówno sie zdarza" literally but we more like use "O kurwa, ja pierdole. Zdarza sie"
While "Zdarza sie" means "happens" and the rest is unnessecary curse words. And rz is same as ż in polish but there are lots of places where you use ż instead of rz and vice versa.

Also, what sort of abstract stuff can't you see the use for in math? We might be able to help. I dont see point in solving things like "My mother is 2 times older than me, but she was 3 times older than me 3 years ago, how old am i now?"
Its hard to solve and incredibly pontless becouse only total asshole would say how old he is this way.
Well i asked my teacher "What is it for?"
"Its for the test"
"But what is the test for?"
"So you can get grade"
"What is point in getting good grades since i can pass school with getting average of 2?"
"Stop asking stupid questions"
The end of story.
And i actually learnt all english i know from games, and the internet, not school.

I think there's ridiculous untapped potential in edutainment games, myself.

It worked for TV shows. Ever seen The Magic Schoolbus or Bill Nye the Science Guy? Those were awesome.

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Never watched those shows. I grew up in France, so this might explains that. There was one absolutely fantastic education show when I was a kid though, called "c'est pas sorcier" which did a great job at explaining things, with little models and demonstrations. It wasn't a cartoon, though, nor really intended to be entertainment - I mean, it was entertaining, it was great, but in the same way a history book is great - because the subject in itself is entertaining, not because it was made to be fun, like cartoons are.

I guess I've always stumbled on the ugly side of edutainment !

I dunno, but I learned most of my knowledge in math, physics and chemistry from edutainment games. And they were fun too.
