There is your problem. These must begin at a very young age (5-6) and continue all the way up to later in highschool. Long term stuff, dude. Of course if you get a bunch of teenagers who haven't done this before ran around for two hours they will be pissed off.

I would very much like to know where schools actually do this.  In America, we're lucky if we get more than just football or basketball for most schools.   And those typically start in middle school or high school.

Damn you google, why are you always so far away? Sitting at the top of my interwebs window, mocking me with you easy information. You are the prostitute of the internet.

None. This is based off of psych theory and the lifestyles of healthy driven individuals. Usually the parent takes the role of the person telling the kid to run or something instead of the educator in the real life scenario.

First of all, I don't see how a 5 year old could even choose a sport he/she wants to do for the next decade.
Second, they were not pissed off. They did enjoy the sports they were doing, and were simply hyperactive after exercise. It's like turning the whole class into mild cases of ADHD and expecting them to behave in a disciplined fashion.
Lastly, these were kids who chose this kind of extended PA. However to think that all kids would want to, or even be able to do so is a gross generalisation of their abilities and personalities.

Wow I never said I was better than someone who hasn't learned about critical thinking. I just said I thought it would do wonders if we were all taught it.

Just because you didn't say it doesn't mean that it wasn't entirely implied by what you said.  When you talk about people as flawed and say they should be different, the implication that you are better then them is rather inescapable.

I am not a teacher, just someone who does paid tutoring paid time (or did before our budget got slashed and I drew the short straw a month back).  But you don't need to teach people to know that it would be nice if only teaching was done better.  If it were easy they would have done so already.  You might as well tell a silver medal sprinter that their problem is that they didn't run fast enough.

A lot of schooling systems are deficient.  But that's a million little problems in them, not some obvious thing they're too dumb to notice.  Telling them to teach critical thinking doesn't help them, it just contributes to the sense that society doesn't appreciate their work.  They would teach critical thinking if they had the talent, training, time, resources and freedom to do so.
I never meant that. You are putting words in my mouth.

My original post in context:
The first one seems... odd.  It's quite difficult to identify "common misconceptions"... the ones you talk about seem pretty isolated, and just teaching people against those specific ones seems counterproductive.  In those cases a better knowledge of physics (specifically how gravitational fields work, which you should come to sooner or later) and IT would help more than just informing them about those specific things.
Teaching critical thinking would do wonders.
I was saying that teaching critical thinking would be a good way to teach people to avoid common misconceptions without having to teach individual misconceptions. I never said anyone was flawed. I never even said teaching was broken.

Besides this I don't think saying people would get benefit from something I got benefit from implies I think I'm better than them. I don't know how to drive, a friend suggests I learn because learning was beneficial to them, I take offence because they think they're better than me? Learning a skill does make you a better person as an individual and at certain things, it's implied, but that doesn't imply they are a better person overall. I don't think it's right to compare or judge people like that.

I'm really not sure where you got all you've said from my original post. What did I say that was so much worse than other people's suggestions?

You don't have to choose the sport for life, only a smester/quarter, so a five year old would try something out and would either like it or not. Whether they know what they are getting into or not (Parental input would probably be good here too)

There are a lot of factors here and I won't pretend I understand all of them, my only guess would be they just got riled up, ramp up the intensity maybe?

And as far as the gross generalizations, isn't that what this whole thread is? To expect everyone to be a stupid git is just depressing and unrealistic.

Embarrassingly there are huge gaps in my basic knowledge base that really should be filled. Like my issues with basic grammar, I still don't really understand know what a verb or adjective is.

Also, I don't actually know what "critical thinking" means. I've heard the term tossed around a lot (mostly when people tell me I have good critical thinking skills or some such), and I've had the concept explained to me once or twice, but to date I still don't get what it really means. Is it just asking the right questions? Because I wasn't taught that, I was born with the irritating tendency to ask questions about things, it has caused great amounts of trouble at times.

Apostrophes should also be taught more, since even I get confused with them sometimes.

I was taught to put apostrophes in lists and, more strangely, whenever the reader should take a breath ::). I'm still not completely certain of correct usage.

I completely agree with the OP. We are turning into mindless consumers. This reminds me of a quote from Liberal Crime Squad:

It's all part of the plan to keep you enslaved, man

Also, swimming and basic survival knowledge is a must. It's really a stupid way to die if you fall over a boat or something.

Oh wow, are you serious, because this is hilarious. We are a very grammatically confused bunch of people.

I agree with the swimming and basic survival knowledge completely, just for the record. The part about common knowledge is the problem. The discipline portion was a tad misguided, I'll admit.

All too serious. This was in top group English, a class I didn't belong in with my poor spelling.

You sure you don't mean commas? Because I don't think I said "Don*breath*t" twice just now.
