Things people should've been taught from the start
« on: March 24, 2012, 06:20:59 pm »

Common Misconceptions, Common Knowlegde and Wilderness Survival are two three things i think children as young as kindergarden age should be educated.

Common Miconceptions:
I see so many people who think so many annoying wrong things, like going to space is just flying up to the point where theres no air, and then you apparently just levitates, some people believe programming is hacking, i was once writing a little thing for managing a few files automatically, a guy accused me of freaking hacking, kids who believe making video games is the art of opening up some sort of magical 3d level editor and hitting a few random keys, all that, it just makes me rage. To make the world a smarter(and better) place.

Common Knowlegde:
Recently a girl, at my age, asked me what kinda music i listened to, i said "jazz", she asked "what is a jazz?".. jesus? I find it startling how many people, including my mom are direction confused, they dont even know where north is, they dont know that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. I recently watched a TV program about unhealthy kids, they thought burger buns grew on trees, mixed up carrots with potatoes and didnt even fucking know what a Cucumber is. I believe people should have a class where all everyday/essential topic should be walked through, things like cooking, language beyond slang and everyday language. basic physics and essential history and culture.

We could also refine above things into teaching people critical thinking!

Wilderness Survival:
So many people barely know how to knap or make a fire, how the hell would this world work without power, google and the internet? Things would go to hell. We need to teach the boys to stop playing Call of Duty and eating chips and learn to make a fire and hunt. We need to teach the teenage girls(that dosent know already) that fashion isnt everything, and a dark age is an age of compromises, those too small jeans can be used for other things than failing at looking pretty, for example, feeding a fire or cutting into useful cloth for example for bandaging a wound. If we stay this way, the next generation will be a bunch of Apple consumer slaves that can barely screw a lightbulb in place! A lil note: No Sexism intended.

Just needed to vent out, sorry for any inconsistent "grmamar" grammar/pure bullshit, im heading to sleep.

Things i forgot but otherpeople reminded me of:

Swimming, many adults cant even swim!
UNARMED COMBAT TRAINING, because people a pushovers.

As a side note, I'm all for classes that teach 'real world' stuff that kids may never learn at home but will be inevitable anyways, but the examples in the OP are fairly vague. Stuff such as taxes, how insurance works, money management, how to get a job, social skills, and physical education classes that actually require physical effort would be great boon for any child being sent out into the world. Now-a-days, it's a blind baptism of stress and innocence, all of which can be avoided with just a few simple lessons that parents rarely teach their kids.

This so fucking much

Teach her what a jazz is!

As far as i know, it was originally called jas, and was slave slang for sex, so that would be desireable.

Anyone who doesn't share my background are ignorant.

For someone who is angry at common misconceptions you seem to be swallowing the whole "other people are such idiots" common misconception that the TV fed you pretty readily.  Not saying that people are all geniuses or anything, but generally TV paints a dark picture to make people watch.

Although, if we're going to be mentioning things young children should be taught, I think swimming should be added to the standard physical education program.

I'm a high school senior, and I know that almost half of my classmates would die if dropped into eight feet of water, which is just plain sad.

Forgot that one, how could it?

Also that one about the childrens was just an example, i have seen much dumber IRL people, like for example this girl in physics class insists that Carbon Dioxide, Oxygen and Water are the same thing, next to her sits this really annoying guy who always just makes a gibberish sentence from buzzwords when asked something, he even thinks Jupiter is a galaxy, and theese people are supposed to be having a job next year? Jesus.

I agree with the wilderness survival thing, cause that's a class I'd totally take.

But the other two are just making people not dumb? I don't see how they'd work.

OP's claiming Denmark, actually (I... think. Danish is Denmark, right? Wikipedia seems to think so.), at least in another thread.

Not sure how Denmark stacks up to the US currently, though.

I think the problem is our idiots are loud, and in some cases, proud of being idiots.  It's like being stupid is a sign of rebellion for some people.

Hey, in the area I'm in, that I was even getting it right guessing at it puts me above the curve :P

... seriously though, why is it Danish instead of Denish? People would be less likely to confuse the country's people with delicious food that way. Guessing it has something to do with the actual language?

I'm not exactly sure where things went wrong, but Denmark is actually Dane Mark, the Mark or land of the Danes. For some reason there doesn't seem to be an agreement on mainland Europe about if they should be called Danes or Denes. The Danes themselves use Dane and Danmark (a as in bar IIRC, but ask a Dane for the exact pronunciation), the Dutch use Denen and Denemarken (e as in bay, but with less of a J-like sounds), the Germans use Däne and Dänemark (ä pronounced roughly like the dutch e). Apparently in English two of these got mixed up at some point in time.
